I only play as an Ork, so I've never seen it shoot above an enemy's head on the first shot. Past that with the recoil sure, but the ability to not lose my lock is too damn useful to me, but it may be because I only play JPA for melee as you point out.
the aiming above the enemy is maaaainly an issue when locking onto orks. it aims reaaaaaly hair on their body so most of your shots will go above them, it dosent lock on to their center of mass like it does on marines, it kinda locks onto the top of their torso/back
Smart pistols are not worth it even if you are a JPA. But they enable you to eventually tell the enemy your aim is really really really bad, that you need to rely on an aimbot to play the game for you. Oh, and they are the perfect counter to any Eldar class. Literally, any of them. (What do you mean, my post is depreciating the merit of the Smart pistol? To do that, it would need to have some kind of merit in the first place! Yes, I'm venting off, I hate this bloody weapon.)
lock onm in general should not be in the game, even on melee the auto follow is annoying and takes away from the skill for melee and shooting when you dont even have to control that. They could remove smart pistol and make melee lock on break after hitting the attack key so jpas jumping can still circle around their fow with out it being a left click simulator without skill involved
Because every modern game dev believes we must cater to casuals who can't aim rather than knowing full well that once upon a time in video games THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS LOCK ON OR AUTO AIM! I remember the days when you simply got gud, stepped up, and learned to aim. Auto-aim and lock-on mode screw everything up as well as you lose control of your character. I can't stand it in melee and wish they would do away with the stupid system all together. Running into pillars, other players, corpses, etc because of lock-on mode is a terrible feeling. Completely takes the control out of the players hands. Not to mention how bad the lock-on is for "smart" pistols now anyway. Just remove it altogether. People will be fine. They are big kids now, they can learn to get better at aiming. All of us growing up with old school games had to do it, everyone else is fully capable. There is no need for any lock on in this game at all.
I've been using one on my painboy. They don't actually work all that well. I've had lots of times where it'll shoot behind a moving person or above the head of a stationary person.
there is also another auto aim besides the lock on. you can feel it jittering the crosshair when aiming. the cross hair should be static not automatically locking on to the targets at a distance.
It doesn't lock on center of mass against marines either, or at least the painboy gun doesn't. It locks on the head if it doesn't bug, though sometimes it does and locks on a foot above the head.
