Can we have some kind of permanent damage show on the armor in function of playtime ? I mean, after few month / year of war, an armor can't be clean like in the manufactorum production line. ( or new scroll slot .. )
The thing is that going the cosmetic way would give the options to do whatever you want. You want to reflect the fact that you have played a lot? Yes, customize your armour with Battle Damage skins. You have played for 2 years but you want to show that you are a soldier taking care of his armour? Then use the Shiny skins instead. We do want people to create their own story and your look is the first step in telling yours. Also, the more options we have for customization the better. One thing I mentioned a while ago is that it would be great to award skins based on deeds - so if you see a Power Armour with Tyranid claw marks you know that the player achieved something great against the Tyranid. At the same time, cosmetics are great in a Cash Shop so... I guess a mix of both would be the perfect balance : )
Achievable cosmetics can work too, which are again optional to equip. I feel that making anyone look a certain way forcibly is stifling their personal creativity.
Ooooh, this is a really nice idea. Yes, I'm all for that. And I think the on-time- battle-damage would put a bit of a strain on the server, and the player's PCs, too, especially with whole units under fire.
"got killed by plasma gun 1000 times? you get the 'no armor but boxershorts with hearths' skin" something like that?
The more I watch the video, the more I feel like some of those weapons are too damn huge. "Heroic scale" on miniatures is fine and all, but there it looks like those assault marines are wielding fething eviscerators sometimes... (the ranged weapons look fine though)
I want the option to have battle-scarred armour (pits, cracks, blade-marks and claw-marks, some pock-mark craters from rounds that didn't penetrate, etc.) all the time when I am full health and full armour - you could let us unlock stuff like that through achievements - along with bionic replacements, service studs, purity seals, trophies, etc. - and also sell some of those things in the cash shop (such as we earn basic versions in the game, and super-cool versions are sold on the cash shop - with bionics even just something simple like we can earn steel versions, but gold, silver/chrome and bronze versions are sold on the store). However I think there are certain levels of damage that you should only show when the player is very battle damaged, to make it clear they are hurting and their armour is damaged - e.g for Space/Chaos Marines: part of the shoulder pad or just the edge/rim breaks off, helmet destroyed, kneepad falls off, gauntlet lost, a hole in the armour that we can see skin or even the black carapace through, one of the exhaust nozzles on the generator falls off, the chest plastron or other plates are holed so that we can see bare cabling underneath and the sparking of cables etc. Then you can have the best of all worlds.
I think battle damage should be a permanent armor customization choice over temporary damage, as others have said, its common in the miniature game for people to paint their characters with damage effects on. I don't think the effect wouldn't last long enough for it to be noticeable on players with low health and would look strange for a med pack to make your armor instantly brand new.
Im in favor of battledamage being a cosmetic option as opposed to a incremental change, if its customisable then you can have it or not depending on your fashion sense at the time, but if its incremental then the server system has to track your current armour state, the damage your armours taking, the way it should look after the damage, the damage your armours taking, the way it should look after the damage etc etc etc thats asking the server system to keep track of and adjust your armour appearance continuously which can only be adding strain
