Ok so we all know with this new edition, anyone can ally with anyone, but some alliances would be a bit hard to explain fluff wise. I thought we could have a place where we can share our own unique stories of unlikely alliances. For example: A hive of Tyranids is on route to attack a group of Tau, but a group of Deathwatch Marines to assassinate a particular 'Nid beast, so they help the Tau. Eldar and Necrons make a reluctant and temporary alliance, seeing as the incoming Chaos incursion is bigger than either of them. An Imperial Guard unit needs special and immediate backup, so an Inquisitor hires some Freebooter mercenaries to give them a much needed close combat boost. Hopefully this'll become a cool place for stories that not many people would have thought of for their own alliances. P.S., if you're doing a 'Nid alliance please don't do a stereotypical "genestealers infected them" story unless you can think of an original twist. Its been done so many times its not even good anymore by itself.
Whyd you put that here? thats not unlikely? two xenos hating groups who always fight each other teaming up to kill tyranids for no reason? makes perfect sense
By my estimation, your first and third examples are more likely than what happened in the Cryptus Campaign, as it would be fairly straightforward for an Ordo Xenos inquisitor to authorize a temporary cooperation with Tau or Orks (particularly the former). The BA + Necron team was more an act of desperation, similar to your Eldar + Necron example but without the legacy of the War in Heaven to make things extra ironic. Oh, and I have an idea for an Ork + Tyranid team: A hive splinter gets cut off and makes planetfall somewhere. While attempting to reestablish connection to the hive fleet, the synaptic 'nids (through some evolution mumbo-jumbo) end up connecting to a nearby WAAAGH! instead and boom, Orky Tyranids.
Yea there aren't really many other canonical stories that aren't bad to base it off of... That's pretty good, I'd love to see someone convert that, hell I might even do it myself. ...and there's one of the bad ones. Well, not so much bad as just bizarre.
Should I mention the necron blood angle alliance was simply Dante being cheated by the silent king? IT'S a fun story really
