Hey guys, Have you ever wanted to be able to reach out and touch virtual reality? Be able to walk around freely while wearing a VR headset, without needing to stay in the tiny cone of a webcam’s vision? Be able to actually see your body in the virtual world, so you can actually move around and play active games, or even learn skills like karate or fencing? Even if you’ve never tried on a VR headset, making these things possible might still appeal to you. Maybe they’re the actual reason you’ve never tried or purchased one, wary of the “VR Sickness” that emerges when your virtual movements are too disconnected from your real world ones. You may know me online as Luciasar, but IRL I’m a student at the University of Rochester working on a virtual reality peripheral we call NullSpace. It’s a suit we’ve developed that lets you walk around freely in virtual environments, and feel them in your hands. We’ve developed a system that compensates for when parts of your body can’t be seen by a tracking camera, and allows your whole body to be visible in virtual spaces. If the camera glitches out, or loses vision of your arm, our system takes over so the tracking is seamless. Not only that, the system has an inbuilt vibrational haptic feedback system that lets you touch virtual objects in three dimensions. While you’re wearing a NullSpace system, you can reach out and feel a virtual wall, box with a virtual opponent, or kick a virtual soccer ball. It’s not complete force feedback, but our research shows brain quickly fills in the gaps to help define physical boundaries to the user. No more waving your arms through objects like a necron wraith. We’re currently gearing up for a Kickstarter to launch next fall, but since I know you guys have a great track record for asking questions and pointing stuff out, as well as a enthusiasm for fighting things on the internet, I wanted to open things up here to get some feedback. What would you like to see from this kind of technology? Being incarnated as an ork or space marine? Having virtual chainsword battles with other players? Smacking around virtual gretchin? If this is something you'd like to see more of, we’re also applying to the Make competition right now and would really appreciate it if you’d lend us your vote in their online contest. It’d be a nice opportunity for us to get some funding and publicity before our kickstarter next fall: http://makezine.com/pitch-your-prototype-2015/gallery/ Does this sound cool to you folks? Let me know what you think!
If I bought something like this, there's no promise Id ever take it off. If this isn't like a gag or joke then daym. Science brah.
No, it's not a joke. You can look us up at Imagine Cup USA and Cornell Cup USA, which are two of the competitions we've recently entered with our technology. We're not doing a ton of actual news releases because we want to get some more professional photos of the technology first before some gaming blog splats them all over the internet. But if you have any questions about how it works, just ask!
Dude this is amazing, Just watched the video you posted and I have to say this is one of the most promising things I've seen in a while. Do you have an official website for this yet?
We are at nullspacevr.com, but it's not totally up yet, just a splash page. You can also like our page at facebook.com/nullspacevr and follow us at @nullspaceVR on twitter. And remember to vote! oh, and youtube:
A no BS full feedback or as close as we can get it suit has a stupid number of applications. I know I'm not the first, but I'll at least be the first here... Porn. It's a no-brainer and it's sure to be a money maker. There's also the training aspect. First Aid, Surgery, Driving, etc. Anything that requires certain combinations of movements with feedback will benefit from something like this. Obviously entertainment as well. You can finally swing your huge anime sword around, or shoot xXxKoolKid32xXx in the face in a more realistic and hopefully satisfying manner. One thing I will request though... Customer Support. No, not what you're thinking. I want customer support clowns to wear these things so I can beat the ever loving snot out of them from time to time. NO I don't want another 47 channels of crap that I won't watch, quit jacking up my bills and FIX MY INTERNET.
Ok bottom line.... can it mimic a boob? Yes = $$$$ No = respect but not many $$$ Maybe=R&D micro bucks
I love how this thread is meant to discus a new revolutionary piece of technology and we are currently debating whether or not it will have porn support. I love you guys
But now back on topic. I said it once and ill say it again, this is just amazing. Really looking forward to more updates and progress on this.
