So... Are you wanting to totally retire Theo? He's not dead-dead. Just out of the tournament. You can retire him if you want, but like in video games, you can never get Theo back

Most fighting games let you reselect characters after a playthroug :x Question does anyonre else get a mortal combat like impression from the tournament? Hmmm if I lose him forever I may want to keep him until a victory.
Except fighting games have premade characters. If you delete a character in say, an MMO, you lose all progress and items. As I said in the OP, and again eaelier, characters are not killed unless the players want it. I'm not really wanting to say it again. You can retire a character if you want. If they lose, they lose, not die. Physical wounds do not matter.
