He doesn't like to fight, and doesn't see the appeal of dying on a nameless battlefield for Tau'va. Given the option, Vash would be stationed on an inner Sept world, away from the grim darkness of war, and raising a family. However, Vash puts on the face of a model soldier. Hoping to be noticed enough to move up, but ignored enough to stay out of direct danger. Vash is clever and accurate with a pulse rifle, but his true talent is position manipulation. On the battle field he is known for using his well stocked med-kit to aid his fellow fire warriors, earning both loyalty and commendation. It's a small price to pay to have someone watch his back and have a potential meat shield. Despite these faults, there is virtue in his selfishness. Knowing that the way to survive the harsh galaxy is only through numbers, luck, and lots of burning plasma. Usually saving a lot of lives in the process.
