I guess it must be down to personal preference. Combat in 40k Shouldn't really be fluid it should be short, violent and brutal.
Speaking as an animator myself, there are generally two camps when it comes to animation; realistic and exaggerated (cartoony). They're both supposed to be fluid and smooth, just in really different ways
I would say that guys animations were more exaggerated with a lot more extremes in the animation. For an example of relatively realistic animations in a game you can look at Assassins Creed for example: It's still smooth and nice but the range of movement is different and the timing is different, making it appear less "cartoony"
I wish companies would show off what they had done when they cancel a game they have had in development for a while
