Except they've got exactly the same damn personality, exactly the same damn quips, the same relationship with the Rebellion (to begin with at least) and follow many of the same tropes. His situation of being on a beat up armed freighter with an older droid and pilot are exactly the same as Katarn's was with Ors and WeeGee. Just because they've changed the origins doesn't change how their personalities, skills, general looks, dialogue and baseline elements are borderline identical. Hell, it just takes a beard and a slight colour swap of his clothing to turn one into the other: I'm not the only one who thinks this either. Just google "Kanan Jarrus kyle katarn" and you'll find half the fandom bringing up this problem. Also, yes, I am well aware of the character so there's no need for the wookieepedia links. Except that they are, quite actively I might add. In a moment of undeserved optimism I decided i'd give the first few books a look, either through purchase or borrowing from the local library. Huge elements of them have been completely re-written and ignore vast chunks of the old setting. The reason and removal of the clone troopers has been retconned. Tarkin's belief and origins have been retconned to some contradictory garbage. The entirety of Darth Revan's story has been retconned. Rogue Squadron has been retconned into oblivion. The idea of the Jedi and Sith having been erased from public knowledge (at least according to Aftermath) never happened. The direct events following Endor have been completely re-written, removing and altering the stories of most of the characters. The Rebel Alliance's actions, the push towards Coruscant, the drive to retake the galactic core, have all been completely retconned. Instead, according to the novels, the Alliance abruptly tried to demilitarize 90% of its forces and semi-gave up. Han Solo has now been retconned to have been involved in a marriage, committing adultery with Leia throughout the entire trilogy. Luke Skywalker, again, is apparently the last of the Jedi rather than the start of a new Order. Many characters, such as Vos, now have completely contradictory personalities compared to their past selves. Half the characters people loved, Corran Horn, Mara Jade, Thrawn and the like never existed. They were either never born or were just wiped away entirely, at least until Disney needs to wheel them out to try and milk cash from an abused fandom no doubt. There is no effort to blur the lines here. There are countless contradictions, direct, intentional ones which completely veer away from both the past and future events of the EU, ensuring what we get is nothing like what previously took place. Stories make no effort to be even vaguely coherent, and the statement from the start has been "This is now canon, the EU never was, you should never have cared about it. Now buy our stuff." There is no effort to integrate the EU short of using its elements as building blocks for their "new and improved" stories, ripping off better authors in their desperation to create something vaguely worthwhile. Sorry, but I for one am not about to forget Disney murdered something I cared about after declaring it worthless; having their "canon" setting rip off its face and parading about in it isn't going to change that fact. Sorry, but I am not in the mood to be charitable towards the miserable shitlords who care less about building a universe than making it marketable to the scumbags who would have never given it a chance in the first place.
They should have handled it like Star Trek did: explain that there are now two Star Wars timelines that exist seperately from each other.
Or how Marvel did their reboot as the spin-off Marvel's Ultimate Universe (which I wish DC had done).
Star Trek always had a huge convoluted universe, something like that just works there, but for Star Wras, introducing something like time travel and alternate timelines would just make things needlessly complicated, it's always been more of a fantasy universe than a science fiction one.
I have come to accept this as the case myself Just so I can stop frothing at mouth when thinking about it It's wouldn't be time travel persay it's like A what if scenario Or an alternate universe
Its really that bad? dang I had so much hopes it. Then it got eaten. I had a horrible thought just now what would happen if 40k got bought by Them? likely the same thing would happen and the butchery would be worse.
They could... use the force... to... alter the future? So it's not exactly the same, but open to new names being thrown in... Maybe?
