That anyone can become a Sorcerer if they make the right pacts (right as in, ones that don't get you consumed) but the ones that didn't off start as Psykers aren't usually going to be the next Ahriman. So yeah, petty sorcerer = newb sorcerer without that much power (by comparison)
Well it's not anyone, you have to access at least some amount of Eldritch lore, you can't just start casting spells left and right. Like in a straight up fight between a sorcerer and Apothecary, especially any of them that had been around long enough to own a force sword, i'd bet on the Sorcerer unless their name was Fabius Bile. Mind you that...not to sound cheesy, but every member of Chaos is a special snowflake. Two Sorcerers can follow the same god, but one could predict the future by stargazing and the other by tearing out a mans entrails and reading them. It's hard to compare the power level or rarity of any two groups in the CSM, even in the same legion.
So yeah, I mean the guys that have found the equivalent of 1 Spell Tome. All warpcraft is powerful when used properly, but individual power and versitility can indeed be scaled, every Sorcerer may be a special snowflake, but they aren't all equals.
Well no, of course not. I'm just saying even in 'weak' sorcerers there just aren't a lot of them, at least not outside the Thousand Sons where you get things like Thrall Wizards.
There's kinda a lot, like how the Harrowing was nothing special but the Warlord was still able to assemble a pretty big entourage. I definitely think there's a lot more of them than Chaos Apothecaries. But yes, that's basically the reason I called them petty sorcerers and not weak sorcerers is pretty much because any warp ability is dangerous, so weak isn't really the proper term, since a Chaos Space Marine with Psykic powers can't accurately be described as weak.
