It would be nifty if a player could give their character three names (First, alias/nickname/middle, Last), but be able to select which one(s) they want displayed in reference to one's avatar

i.e. as Smurf "Blue" McSphess, the player could choose to just be known (display name) as Blue, Smurf, McSphess, any two names, or by full name.

(these are stand in names, I do not plan to, nor do I want anyone else to make silly names. We'll see how far that goes. That is another discussion altogether.)

Could be nice. Certainly a good way to get fluff-appropriate names if one of them has to be approved to be shown (a moderator could do it).
One of the few things I don't want to see in this game is people running around with silly names above their heads. Lore-like names above their heads, still a bit weird but I could accept that, if I would get to see them once I am close enough to a teammate.

Was saying (page 2) something about having Lore Fitting names proposed for each factions, not sure how we would implement that (Name Generator maybe?). Again, I need to sit down with the designer to design that feature ASAP

Let us know how that goes, and if you do a name generator, you could always come back to the forums and ask fans to post/and come up with [serious] suggestions for faction/sub faction specific names. Name generators need a lot of names, and we as a community could help.

If you were to go with a name generator, would you be locked into whatever the generator spat out at you? Personally, I think that a generator would be a good place to start, but I don't like the idea of being forced to have a name that may or may not be what I want for my character.

You never played a MMO with name generator? You just keep hitting the button till you like something or you finally come up with an own name.

Exactly - Usually I just use it to see how Names for that Faction should be like, then I create my own to fit : )

Hey that's what I usually do! ... Cheap Imitator... Anyway, Name Generator.... There are a few bad ones on the internet for Wh40k lol.
