This, I recognize traitor marine is an official name for our faction even if it's not universally representative. Not every Chaos Space Marine thinks like Horus in that 'When the Traitors hand strikes, it strikes with the strength of a legion.' but a lot of them revel in being a traitor(Like some Night Lords.) or wear it ironically(Like the Emperors Children wear everything ironically.) and a thousand different points of view inbetween. I don't like the name, but I know the basis in lore, and if we wanted to make absolutely everything represent the nuances of the Warhammer 40k universe then BHVR and GW would have to collaborate on thousands of things while at the moment we're just trying to nail the settings basic feel, and we don't even do that for the branding of the tabletop much less here.
Well I'm glad to hear you're at least addressing this, I think we've all known that the chance of actually getting this changed is slim, but I would certainly appreciate the possibility. It's a small thing but it would certainly my own satisfaction with the faction's in game portrayal. Well yeah, but the point we've been trying to make is that Codexes and stuff are almost exclusively written from the Point of View of the Imperium, of which it of course makes sense that they'd be constantly focused on what vile traitors those dastardly chaos villains are! But we're playing from the Point of View of Chaos Marines.
Wait, so some random dude in the Imperium of Mankind decided the the Eldar and Orkz should call Chaos Space Marines for "Traitors"? That makes less than no sense... Using the word "Traitor" for the Chaos Space Marine's "Tactical" cause quite a bit of immersion breaking for the xeno factions when referring to said class, just try to imagine an Eldar or Ork yelling; "Traitor at B" or "2 Traitors going around the left side", it would sound stupid and make no sense from a lore perspective. I know this wouldn't happen very often, but assuming the "Tactical Classes" are the only classes with capturing abilities then we would relatively often need to call them out. It also sounds rather stupid to call for a "Traitor" after you have cleared a Capture Point... I agree with you on this, but to be honest I didn't expect Games Workshop to care about other factions... And yes, I know they do, but the Space Marines are their poster boys and it really shows. It would be nice if we could actually convince that this game isn't yet another game made to honor and glorify the Imperium of Mankind, but actually have several factions with equal chances/opportunities, though I can't even imagine the expression of the GW team if someone said "I actually dislike the Space Marines.", they would take him for being insane or something worse (e.g. a traitor) Anyway, they could at least have called them Renegade Marines, since this sounds a bit better IMO and is slightly more "correct". A renegade is someone who join another faction (often opposing) due to changing his/her views, this is often religious in nature (like the God-Emperor). Even though the word "Renegade" is negative, it isn't nearly as insulting as "Traitor".
Hi Nathan, Thanks for your swift response, and for your support in agreeing to mention this again to GW. It is, literally, all we could ask of you. Speaking personally, I remain slightly mystified as to why GW didn't select the name they use themselves in the lore in reference to the class, and have used in previous 40k licensed games - although I don't doubt there was logic behind it. As you say, I'm sure Chaos Space Marine must have been considered during the course of the discussion. I imagine that the Chaos players' reaction to Traitor Marine as a class name may be a surprise to GW's licensing team, though. I suppose the best way to sum it up is that while we're quite relaxed about the Imperium calling us Traitors and the Orks calling us Spiky Boyz, it's a bit unusual to see those terms used to define our own classes! However, we entirely accept that the final decision rests with GW. If the strength of support amongst the community in favour of the name GW itself uses in the lore and on the boxes of the models doesn't sway their decision, then so be it. But at least we can look ourselves in the mirror and honestly say that we tried. If there is anything we can do to support you that may help in persuading GW, please let us know. Thanks again.
While I don't think the question of favoritism is productive to the discussion, I do think that when considering the Chaos vs Imperium Dynamic there was an oversight of the perspective of the other two factions. I've been over this before, but since @Oveur has taken notice I'd like to go deeper into the Xenos view of things. For the Eldar I don't get the impression that them being Traitors to the Emperor is very important to them, what matters is they are pawns of Chaos and in league with She-Who-Thirsts. The treason is just evidence of the corrupting influence of Chaos. Orks if they even knew about the Horus Hersey would see it as a perfectly reasonable reaction. The Big Boss Emperor stopped fighting and the next biggest baddest boss stepped up to replace him. To them that's a perfectly reasonable response and business as usual. It's not treason at all, it's just how things are supposed to work. That said, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me that Xenos will be referring to the Chaos Marines as traitors because that isn't something important to them, the only people who really focus on this aspect are Imperial troops. Chaos Marines are too busy trying to become demigods to worry about that Corpse of an Emperor.
You have to realize that it server absolutely no purpose to try to convince me or others within EC but feel free to continue, I'm just pointing out that it really doesn't look like how important lore is taken and how holy the canon is within GW and the best I could do is really give you their mailing address.
A number of us were hoping someone from Behaviour could suggest a dialogue, as you guys have more clout than random people who have already given them money.
That was one of the pondered options, though it would probably be disrespectful without running it through you guys first, since its your game in the end.
While I'd be willing to contact them, I'm just some random guy on the internet, and like has been said by others just now having a developer mention they're receptive to the idea seems like it would carry more weight than even my finest 8-pointed essay on why I think the game/chaos fanbase would benefit from this.
