So, like any proppah ork boy, I've been trying to work on getting proficient in melee. I am aware of the rock-paper-scissors bit with melee, but the thing that ABSOLUTELY confuses me is that it does not seem to work! Counter-Attack beats Fast Attack Fast Attack (with enough force) staggers Heavy Attacks Heavy Attacks "ignore" Counter-Attacks So there's this beakie who's spamming Counter-Attack. Easy peasie. Hold right click, bash his face in. Win eas-... He's not even phased and still spamming Counter-Attack. We'll lets put another Heavy into him. ...And another... Okay, back up and put some bolter rounds into him. ...Aaaaaaaaaand I'm dead. The thing is this isn't even a rare occurrence. I've unloaded fully charged heavy attacks with the Sparky Axe into fething ELDAR and they aren't phased. Then I get stabbed by the FUCKING KNIFE and lose all my shield and 50% of my HP on a Space Marine. Honestly, am I doing something wrong? Is it just really bad lag (that I have no way of checking)? Should I just be a Flash Git and go dakka every time? Side-Note: Also, why does dodge-rolling just seem like prolonging the inevitable? You just get out of the silly-long animation and then immediately get a power-axe to the back of the skull.
First, what weapon do you use? Second, where are you from? (lag question) Third, did you see any teleportation when this happened?
Strong attack is broken and not reliably beating "counter attack"/Defensive Bash. Strong attack is supposed to not only defeat the counter attack, it's supposed to hit for full damage. Neither of those are happening right now. A lot of the melee mechanics are not reliably working right now. It's frustrating I know, believe me. Until we get an update that fixes these issues, nothing in melee combat can be relied on to do what it's supposed to do. I dont buy any of the "it's just lag" replies. Lag on Maggon is really bad and does indeed cause some melee related issues. Lag though isn't the problem 100% of the time. Olipsis seems to be the most stable map, and I still see melee mechanics not performing as they should on this map. Strong attack bit starts at 4:12, but most of the video covers all the current bugs and broken mechanics that I could find with melee. View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HvfrQpZaQY
The Electro-Axe. The "best" melee option orks have currently in terms of... everything but attack speed, really. Mainland USA. Mid-West. Generally don't have pings over 200 with any other game. No teleportation, but gobs and gobs of getting shot through walls, getting hit by far away enemies in melee, completely mis-timed animations (get downed while melee charge-up is happening), etc. Well, as an hard-core ork boy... That's just freaking infuriating. As if dealing with fething Heavy Bolters wasn't bad enough...
About attack range reduction, I think that's intentional. All weapons have their attack range reduced now because you can move while charge, you know this (Yay! No more teleporting melee). But I think the issue is that you sometimes can not disrupt enemy's firing, which makes backpedalling possible.
So far Strong Attack vs Dbash has been working 100% for me this patch, so it might differ based on latency. I get around 60ms. Every Dbash that I see and have had time to charge up a Strong attack has been trounced soundly, both giving and taking. I also mainly play as an Ork using the electric choppa. A big problem with pursuing runners and backpedallers comes from the new changes they made to stop people from phasing through each other in melee. Right now, you stop moving if you collide into someone while attacking. Problem is that your target doesn't stop moving. So, if you're moving in the same direction as your target, the overwhelming majority of the time the target will just keep moving and be out of range by the time your melee attack hitbox goes out. Good example of this is 1:22 in Njord's video.
Well, I'm somewhat happy that it's (apparently) not lag and that these are issues everyone else seems to be having.
Melee is not working for every race, believe me The Rules melee should obey get bend all the time, Counters do not counter etc. But compared to other melee builds we had this one is quite good ^^
