I am a huge fan of melee fighting games for PC and I just wanted to make it clear that a Darksouls style of melee combat will be far too basic and simplistic for a game like this. Please strongly reconsider looking at Mount & Blade and enhancing something along the lines of that. Also you need to make walking more prevalent in the game to make melee combat more viable (you can't just run away the second you get in trouble) with huge accuracy penalties for running. Discuss! EDIT1: New I'm not expecting something overly complicated or slow, and large scale battles do work as I have been in countless 100+ mount and blade battles, and in all honesty high levels of skill will yield lots of quick kills and a shock effect. The idea would be to have some depth to the combat system and not literally one type of attack. In all honesty they should have a switch between melee and shooting type of button you can hit and that would give full use of all mouse functions for both roles.
You can forget about this, they want something similar to Space Marine and Dark Souls, they are changing the melee combat right now and we should have some details soon... althought our definition of soon might not be shared by the devs.
Been discussed to death, you cannot have an overly complex system for melee in a game where hundreds of people will be shooting at you at the same time. Making prolonged duels will only lead to your death from an onlooker, so melee needs to be powerful and fast. This doesent mean it will be a simple button mash, we already have block and block breakers, probably more things on the way since Brent recently said they are revamping the melee system some more. But as stated, dont expect something overly complicated or slow, that doesent fit in this game.
So once again the focus is on shooting play style and making melee combat a "hold right click to win" type of game. Wonderful I'm not expecting something overly complicated or slow, and large scale battles do work as I have been in countless 100+ mount and blade battles, and in all honesty high levels of skill will yield lots of quick kills and a shock effect. The idea would be to have some depth to the combat system and not literally one type of attack. Nonetheless, you got to admit that archers are pretty hated in M&B and here there will be a lot more of them, in equivalent terms. They're also trying to make gameplay resilient to up to 200 ms lag (IIRC, don't cite me) and it doesn't work with M&B's extremely latency critical system which becomes near unplayable over 120 ms (and annoying over 80-90).
Against zero machineguns, no grenades and also no laser/plasma/fusion weapons, two completely different games, try to play PS2 with a knife it should be closer to EC than M&B.
Way to put words in their mouths. Simple doesn't mean "bashing two rocks together." It just means that since this is a game meant for large battles full of zergs it'd kind of impractical to have a bladed ballet come out in the design. Can't have parries, ripostes, counter attacks, pirouettes, feints and such put I'm when the main expectation is it has to be quick and brutal with a high probability to have at least 29 other guys all at once attempting to fill you full of lead and shurikens.
The reason for that is usually the kiting, and the way armour is balanced in the game. Based on 40 mechanics it should avoid a lot of damage instead of absorbing it. The other part is being able to run from combat and continue to shoot. If done properly the game should force you to fight who ever engages you in combat for a short period of time until you can choose to retreat.
Mount and Blade is terrible outside of Mount and Blade. Sorry. Darksouls melee seems a much better route.
I'm going to agree with anyone on the dark souls approach. Just simplify it a bit, and its all ready to go.
