You don't need a special career, but you can drive a vehicle only if you are a basic Troop. Have you seen a terminator or assault marine driving?
And you can summon a vehicle only in a squad. If it's a 2 sit Land Speeder, you have to be in a squad of 2+.
And if you have a squad of say 12 melee warriors, you can summon one transport for a squad.
And in the end for a 100 people you mustn't be able to have more than, say,
4 tanks, 5 transports, 5 two-sit harrassers and a couple dozens of bikes.
Doesn't look like too many, right? But it may appear to be too many, I'm affraid. It means that all 100 people are motorized.
That's why vehicles must be a valuable purchase every time you decide to use them..

    That's how I see it.

Maybe the a mechanic where the squad actually earns a resource by taking objectives together and then the squad leader can spend it, that way the armor you have is squad based support and you don't have lone wolves spawning random tanks here and there.

Like I said before make vehicles physical things that need to be stored and repaired not things that magically appear at a computer console. I agree on infantry being the only ones that should able to take objectives. I was flabberghasted that Vehicles could take objectives in PS2 its like troops have no role a car can't do better except for biodomes.

If you link the vehicles to one class you are going see that class over played just so people can use the vehicles. There will always be a metagame its just learning how to minimise its impact on fun for the majority of players.

I strongly believe no one at low level or whatever it will be in this game, should be able to drive anything other than basic Transports like Rhino's. Then unlock the next set of vehicles which have some firepower but not tremendous. Keep repeating that until you get to high level players who can bring land raiders and the like to batttle. All that tied into a resource system to actually purchase them when needed and with cool downs should keep the focus mainly on Infantry combat but still allow people to get there 40k Vehicle fix all be it at a much more controlled level.

Having the vehicles not being able to zerg as much as PS2 should help optimization as well as gameplay too. I would say to anyone lucky enough to get beta access, this is one of the key things to help the dev's get the balance right. If you want this game to have years of life and not fizzle out when players abuse the system like PS2.

I also very much hope it will be impossible to buy vehicles (or the resourses needed for vehicles) with real cash.

I really need good melee because im an ork. But i think it would be important for mecks to take extra damage from the rear.
  7. The original Asheron's Call had the best player movement I have ever experienced. PvP especially.

I wonder if it would be possible to have vehicles be tied to SFs.

For example when a SF completes objectives and contributes to the campaign they gain SF resource points. Those points can then be spent on support options (artillery, dred support, etc. ) or vehicles.

Those vehicles would then be tied to that SF and the leaders of the SF could put restrictions on who could take those out.

    This would provide many benefits
    • Tanks will not be common as a SF would have to work hard to gain the points to afford large powerful tanks
    • Tanks would become valuable as the SF would not want to lose their investment
    • It would allow tanks to be customized by the SF who owns them. Which would make each tank unique and allow for more customization
    • Also the SF leaders could put restrictions on who could take out the tanks. That way only squad leaders/commanders can deploy tanks.

We discussed most of that in the thread I posted above, but apart from that, nice to finally see one who uses SF as well;)

i know games workshop moved away from guess weaponry, but that might be a good way to balance tanks. if they aim in a general direction and then have scatter, it would be a lot harder for an army of tanks to mow down a bigger army of fast infantry than most other mmos with their targeting circle
