"The Tactical Squad shall draw the enemy's fire, thus allowing the Devastator Squad to attack from a position of strength." As our liege Guilliman taught us.
One day, my Sternguard will be in game...one day. In all his specialist ammunition glory. I just hope we can get a helmet cosmetic that changes the helmet to those flat-ish mouthpiece helmets like this... That is far and away my favorite helmet style. Also, I hope they get voice packs that make your voice sound a lot more "vox-y" like the marine who says "neutralizing" (before he gets sniped in the head) in this... I faintly remember a thread discussing the lack of "bucket" voice effects and that apparently the dev team didn't want to use that.
This is true. But just to be clear there are some chapters which view Devastators differently, Space Wolves Long Fangs and Blood Angels are a good examples of two chapters who view them differently and their devastator squads tend to be composed of experienced veterans.
Boo, why didn't they want to use it? Did they say why? I mean, the choice is theirs either way but I'm curious why a "bucket-y" voice would be rejected other than "we don't have time to design that now".
Fortunately, searching through Google allowed me to find the exact thread and quote I was looking for. Here is Noisemaker talking about the "bucket" effect and that it went against what the devs and GW wanted. It continues for the next couple of pages. The example given is Leandros in the Thunderhawk with his helmet on.
A Standard Codex Astartes Abiding Devastator squad consists of 10 Marines. 1 Sgt leading the squad, 4 Heavy weapons users, and 5 other marines (Often recently promoted scouts) who carry spare ammo and closer range weapons to act as spotters and support for the Heavy Weapons users. The primary purpose of the squad is to provide medium-long range fire support for the rest of the squads, suppressing enemy positions killing when possible. Often engaging armor pieces if dedicated anti-armor weaponry is in use, such as Plasma cannons or Lascannons. As mentioned previously, the squad compositions portrayed in EC are nothing like the standard compositions of any of the chapters that are supposedly present. With little to no cohesion, far larger numbers of troops and vehicles than would actually be present, and far weaker weaponry and armor. If an actual group of 30 marines were sent, it would likely be 1 scout 1 tactical and 1 devastator squads, and it would be a massive battle of epic proportions that would rarely ever occur and likely be told in the halls of the chapter battle barges and homeworlds for years to come, not to mention the fact that there would be, at most, 5 actual losses on the Space marine side, which would be an insanely huge loss for the chapter that would be mourned for years to come. If 5 chapters had been sent to Arhkona, then it would have been deemed one of the largest threats the Imperium has ever faced. As, if I recall correctly and please correct me if I am wrong, one of the greatest ork WAGGHHs ever was stopped by 3 or so entire chapters.
