is it weird that so many of us found 40k when we were 13?

My older brother was so into Warhammer that he used to save up his lunch money to buy miniatures instead of eating at school. I was much younger than him so I didn't really understand it all at the time, but years later I came into contact with the universe again via Dawn of War. He'd stopped playing tabletop and video games a long time ago by this point, but he could still remember a great deal of lore, which is what interests me more than any other aspect of Warhammer.

  3. I must have been 4 or 5 when I got my first Space Wolf mini in the late 80s, my older brother took up the hobby after me.

I have been a Warhammer fan since 1989 when I was 12. A school friend who had been collecting miniatures for a couple of years introduced me to the hobby and I have collected and painted figures ever since. I was initially drawn to fantasy through Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson's Fighting Fantasy books which my friend and I had a shared interest in. I remember playing Heroquest with my mate too, which kept me interested in fantasy somewhat.

But when Space Hulk hit the shelves, I was converted completely. I got Space Hulk in late 89 and my mum got me Deathwing and Genestealer for Christmas in 1990. I had already painted my terminators (from Space Hulk) as Ultramarines mainly because I liked blue (being an Everton fan also) and over time I kept painting them blue. I also started reading more and more of the lore and though Ultramarines take a lot of flak I'm happy I've stuck with them. Recently however, I have begun to paint some Pre-Heresy Emperor's Children.

One of my favourite games was Epic 40k which I swapped some junk miniatures for with another friend who couldn't be bothered learning the rules. I loved being able to field massive armies because I felt that's what 40k was all about.

I have played pretty much every computer/console game related to Warhammer that I could find and, even though it was fantasy based, I am a massive fan of Age of Reckoning, playing it for five years until they pulled the plug.

My wife isn't very happy at the prospect of me immersing myself even more in my Warhammer dreams.

    Courage and honour!

Hmm I think I was 8 or so (14 years ago) and I was going to a Pokémon tournament at a local game store and I saw the current codex of imperial gaurd at the time and was instantly hooked by the lore but wasn't able to afford any models until like 4 years ago lol...yah for jobs.

I was walking down the street one day and we just bumped into each other and hit it off immediately, we just seemed to love so many of the same things! (long walks in the warp, heresy by the fire on a cold night, SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE, playing with the hell hounds in the park) needless to say we have been inseparable ever since.:D

Played Fire Warrior and thought it was cool but i didnt realize that it was a big developed universe. Then i played DoW Dark Crusade and loved the Necrons. Later i connected the 2 games and searched the interwebz for info and discovered GW.com and the Lexicanum, started watching battle reports and paint tutorials on youtube and in the end it became my greatest obsession (leaving Star Wars and DBZ in the dust). Now i paint, convert, read lore, read books, write fanon, and especially play the video games

Many years ago(Soulstorm was already out so somewhere after 2008) I played Dawn of War 1. It interested me and I slowly built up my knowledge by reading Lexicanum. Eventually I picked up the Ravenor omnibus.(I didn't know it was the sequel to Eisenhorn, but it was still easy enough to understand, thankfully) Back then I still thought everything was about Space Marines... so I was in for quite the surprise when it turned out to be about the Inquisition. It was a good surprise though.

It also helps that I had a friend who was already into 40K during all this.

Your avatar, dude. That's Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force in Space Marine armor. Now that I'm looking at it, it looks more like Legion of the Damned or maybe Black Legion than Deathwatch though.

Hey I was about 10, G! :D At that age, I had read stories about tabletop battles and was insistent on getting some models. I got my mum to order a load of fantasy models (not Warhammer) from online, but they never arrived. Instead of being glum, I did more research and came across 40k. I fell in love with the aesthetics, lore and so my dad took me into one of their stores. I picked the starter set from the shelf (4th edition I believe) and I was off! I guess I have to thank both my parents for letting me use their money for that initial period!
