The great thing about steam is that always automatically patches games so they can run on new computers. But, it also acts as a shell API which runs a game through steam instead of via the operating system (For the past couple of years Steam has acted as it's own Linux based API), which is a way to play old games on a system which otherwise can't run it in it's native format unless you forked out an extra $100 on your OS to run it in compatibility mode (and even then there is no guarantee it would run, you need to install old runtime libraries, which you can only get via downloading Visual Studio Community which has Windows XP runtime libraries, or hunt around the internet for the particular libraries the old game needs). A key example being the old Total War titles, none of them have been able to run properly since Windows Vista. Try running Medieval 2 GOLD on any computer which has come out since 2008, it won't run properly. Unfortunately the non DRM keys for games can't be used on Steam and Steam has unique keys for games so when you purchase via steam, you're stuck with the steam version and visa versa. Good thing steam has sales, so you can always rebuy old games you own really really cheaply on there.
Thanks for the explanation Psyktooff, that was quite an interesting read. And that actually explains quite a lot of why some of my old games work so well lol.
