Its a prequel, but I think it is also a standalone (?) Seperate from main lore to satisfy the "BUT CANON!?" rage out. Lol ....butt canon
It is the first game (warcraft orc and humans) but as the post above me said its supposed to be an alternate timeline so that they wont have to deal with lore.
Alright, at the risk of derailing this thread, that i'd seriously have to disagree with personally. Not all of us are like that. Too many to be sure, but there are those willing to hand out negative review scores on big budget games, or praise indie releases as and when they appear. Eurogamer for example tends to be fairly even handed as these releases come. Unlike many, they cited many of the technical and plot problems of Fallout 4 while admitting to its strengths and Giant Bomb specifically downgraded its score thanks to poor optimization. At the same time, plenty of them have praised indie titles as and when they deserve it such as Sunless Sea, which is easily one of the best narratively driven rogue-like games of the last decade. Hell, just to cite a few personal examples, I slagged off Evil Within for terrible map design, controls and mechanics, openly called Mad Max lackluster thanks to often being middling or boring outside of the awesome vehicle combat, and heavily criticised Tom Clancy's The Division for a shockingly bad release and insane bugs. Hell, i've gotten death threats over that last one and I stand by what was said. The point is, certain websites are far too forgiving and often play favourites with bigger money developers way too often. Yet for all of that, we're not nearly as bad as film journalism just yet.
