P2W means you get to have gear that is better or just the ability to obtain gear much more quickly than someone who doesn't pay.
As this is a Closed Alpha, it would be reasonable to expect that there will be multiple server wipes, and progress will not be saved when the game goes gold. At this point you are not paying to play a game, you have payed and are jockeying for a position to help them apply to sand paper to the project, smoothing out imperfections, and finding ones that may not have shown up in previous smaller tests.
