I can't help agree with you. Though on one point, I like the idea that it would encourage a challenge to try something daring like: surviving for a few minutes or testing out each weapon type. But anything like-Killing a specific unit, exploring a key spot, getting 'X' amount of kills seems redundant.
I'm not against having achievement in the game. I also wouldn't mind them being kill based. Like killing a Raptor while their in flight, or successfully defending a point a certain amount of times.
If the achivements are difficult tasks, the kind that gives real meaning to the word “achivement”, and at most rewards some sort of cosmetic items, like weapon skins, then I am ok with it.
Well that's still a problem, Take something like "Survive 5 minutes while getting X amount of kills" That's going to make you not want to risk that life defending a critical objective because you're too busy getting your achievements which is very bad practice and I would hate to see it encouraged.

Personally I detest achievements. Exploring the world should be its own reward. Players should want to do it because they want to find cool secrets and interesting stuff the developers purposefully put in there, not because they have a stupid little box telling them to. I don't give a flying fudge if I've completed 10 quests or killed 100 <insert species here> But what about the things I do actually feel proud of? Where's my achievement for repeatedly meeting the same enemy in PvP and finally managing to beat him after a really intense duel? Where's my achievement for being naughty and finding my way into areas the developers didn't intend me to go? Or that time I single-handedly kited a boss to death as the healer after our group wiped? I think achievement systems are a really lazy way of giving gratification to people who should, in my opinion, not need it. If you don't feel satisfied when you overcome a tough monster unless the screen lights up with ponies farting rainbows, a serverwide announcement telling everyone what a top chap you are, and a box of gold and rare shiny items then I wonder if the game itself is really what you're interested in. Achievements have always struck a nerve in me, and I don't really know why. Fair enough if you like them, but I think you should be given enough space in the game to make your own fun, make your own memories, rather than rely on an 'achievements system' to tell you you're playing the game right.
I like achievements, but mainly those where you do something that would unlock something, ingame, a reward, something cosmetic that would be cool
