From the posts I have read from you, Lore is not something you appear to be concerned with... But that's the stuff you have to know, to know what you want, instead of what you think you want. IDK about that, ESO pulls off a pretty decent size range and all the equipment has to fit all characters. As Orks are generally the same shape, making equipment bigger or small to fit them is as simple as altering a size variable on the model most of the time.
I hope they make an exception for Orks. Regardless of how much extra work it might entail, its pretty important. The majority of their hierarchy is based off it. Obviously there are exceptional Orks who are smaller in size yet have great significance but its extremely rare. I really feel they would be doing the race injustice by overlooking it. I'd love to have a dev get involved in this discussion. Something they need to consider is that the vast majority of their new players coming into this game are going to be doing so via the "Free to Waagh" model. Its important that the Ork experience isn't just cut/paste of the other races & has some very unique attributes. I think this would be a great start. Not only would it help new ork players/Free to Waagh players establish leaders quickly & know who to direct questions towards, but it will also be extremely lore appropriate.
Updated the original post to reflect some of the ideas we have been going over. I really hope the devs give it some serious consideration.
Hero classes may differ in size compared to normal orks but I don't think any class of the same type will have variation
I also believe they mentioned something about sizes being reflected through different armor pieces. Lately the search has become really ineffective. Really having a bad time trying to get Dev quotes :/. First page of results and I'm already bumped back to stuff from 2013!
Hi, so the situation is that currently afaik we will not have Orks growing. There is a possiblity that Boyz vs. Nobs might be a little different in height, and that Hero Orks might be different in size, but that is not confirmed yet. For now please understand that besides some technical challenges there is also some challenges "how it looks" when you use the same animation and scale it up or down - this might be an issue when it comes to weapon models (they would need to be scaled too) or when interacting with any element of the world or even in executions when angles would look very different. That would mean that if we just want 3 different sizes, we are generally adding 2x more animations, weapons and gear for the Orks, multiplying their cost by that number. Now - and I cannot stress this enough - current plans afaik are not to do this - BUT that is not the final word, if there is some extra time we haven't used up we might do this, and if the founders program is successful enough these are the things that increase immersion and therefor the good things about the game. As of now I would say it's something coming after launch! I'll make sure Brent and David have also a look at this thread, just to confirm what I know so far. Cheers!
Thanks for posting Patrick! Pretty much what I thought. I'd just like to note that if sizing for Orks ends up being 'in the plans', you should also make 'build' considerations for Space Marines. Either way I think having Heroes and Non-Heroes be different sizes is a fairly acceptable solution (for me at least).
The game would feel very alive with variations in size for SM/CSM, and addressing the very noticeable size differences between Boyz and Nobz. For immersion sake, the SM/CSM size variations isn't a huge deal per say, but the Orks' sizes are absolutely important. So if it's planned in the near future, that's great. But if I need to sell you my kidney to have it for launch, well... I'll still have another kidney left.
