There's a progression system that lets you work specifically for wargear and class specific improvements you want. There's a store that lets you buy different weapons for requesition. But what's that, you want want to customize your gun with recoil improvement or larger magazine? NO **** YOU. Buy a hundred boxes and some time after reaching rank 5 you will finally get the 20 point thing you wanted on your weapon since rank 1. What's the point of loot boxes? It's an rng element that obscures what options you have to customize gameplay for weapons(and things like lifesteal change the experience a lot) and a major frustration factorm, when you get showered in masterworks and improvements for weapons you will never use. You have a stickied thread that tells players how to cope with rng factor, but the problem is, you still gonna hit rank 5 before you run out of 1k and 5k boxes and miss some of items.
Because gimmicks. RNG is big right now because Overwatch is doing it (and they did because others before them, they just popularized it with Blizzard's name). Just like the "no blocking" decree from GW, this stupid decision will haunt us for the games entire life.
Well WoW progression system is based on drop which is RNG. Diablo is completely based around the gear which is RNG. Why you have problems with boxes?
RNG boxes are like slot machines; The goal is to short circuit your ability to make a cost assessment. If I know that it'll take X more games to unlock Y then I might say to myself 'you know, i don't really feel like putting in X time just to get Y.' But if all I know is that Y is a possible reward, which can show up anytime I open another box, it kicks in that 'just one more game....' mentality that keeps people playing.
Because I really like to pay 30k requisition to get a mod that add more penetration to the power fist
the disadvantage of getting what you want is that after getting it, you have nothing more to look forward to
This is pretty much it, and im a sucker for it. Most games revolve around a carrot on a stick, especially online multiplayer games, most come in the form of some kind of RNG. This is just one way of doing it, only you notice it more as the RNG involves a physical, deliberate act of 'rolling the dice' with a box opening.
There is a method to it though. You have to get all the 1000 point boxes first, and then start with the 5000. Because if you have two of a particular item in your inventory you cant get it again, if you don't do this you'll end up getting expensive reskins of those particular items, rather than new cool stuff.
Overwatch only gives you cosmetics that has no influence on character performance in game. This game however, RNG boxes gives you actual items that can change the function of a character in game. Some items is almost requires, like power weapons and melta. You can't RNG out items that people actually need. To make it worse there are place holder items which are essentially the same, so you get duplicates of the same item from a RNG loot box... shitty design is shitty.
You can buy the weapons directly and skip the RNG. The addons should be nice extras not required needs.
