I enjoy the game, but to a limited extent. The non-enjoyable part for me is: 1-) Lack of player in game right now (15 vs 5 matches or 10 vs 20, that kind of stuff). 2-)Lack of map variation right now there is way too much torias, few times pegasus, seldom blackbolt, didn't get anything else in a while. from time to time there is medusa and olipsis. I never get fortress matches (too few people), and we miss zedek and maggon because of the rework of game mode in progress. 3-) The missing content I'm most looking forward to : a) Campaigns b) better WORLD map (that shows the whole of arkhona with permanent territorial conquest that shows on the world) c) TEQ, elites, more visual customisation, Tank battles new maps and game modes Special bonus mention that would turn it from good/great to epic 4-)** BONUS** flyers, artillery bombardments, destructibles, secondary objectives
TL DR: Actual reasons that development was hurt. Game built to do more (Battlefield vs CoD debate), easier content to implement than other games, so cool stuff and game modes unlike other games. Long wait. Now that this thread has run for a while, I'd like to weigh in on something. It's been covered why the game isn't fun, but I'd like to talk about why it happened that way. First, the big development hurdles. -They lost a lot of the dev team early on, everyone remaining had to pick it up and everyone new had to learn what had already happened. -Unreal 4 turned out to be a much more difficult beast to handle than they expected. Had they been programming on Unreal 3 a lot of these kinks would have been sorted out. Before you blame them for not using Unreal 3, it would have been bad business sense to not use the newer engine. Some times the smart move fails. -Speaking of which, upgrading to the newer builds of Unreal 4 (that solved problems) also cut into development. -The full on involvement of Games-Workshop set things back as well. It's cool that everything is as lore envisioned by GW, but for instance the meltagun was finished, presented, and then completely redone. Not the only thing, and it set back development. -Dual development between the open alpha and test builds. There was a promise of a founder's firing range, it was realized that would draw away from core builds, and so rather than renage on that they pushed out an open alpha. But they did spend time on balancing (as players requested) which drew away from content creation. And those are things that happened. For everyone who says "Miguel promised us BIG THINGS but Nathan only gave us little things" you should reflect on the fact that Miguel is no longer here and there are reasons for that. Ok, cool, that's out of the way. Having said all that, we still got a lobby shooter at "launch". Which doesn't excuse why the lobby shooter portion is so bad. I'm not here to argue away the problems in the game. There's balance, netcode, melee, and all the other legitimate things you have previously mentioned that make this game not great. But there's a reason for that. Things like CoD and even the Space Marine multiplayer (that so many of you love so much apparently) were purpose built for that limited game mode. Everything put into it is about that lobby shooter element. And you can feel it. Battlefield is widely lauded over CoD for all the extra things you can do like drive tanks and whatnot, but you can catch where that extra dimension of gameplay bogs down the core shooter component. Or maybe you can't, that's not a big deal, but it's there. It's still an incredibly polished game (backed by a large dev team working on prehashed code) but that added layer of complexity pulls away from the shooter just a little bit. Here's the kicker, Eternal Crusade was built from the ground up to exceed Battlefield in those dimensions of gameplay. It's meant to have core shooter mechanics in a lobby system, but with melee, vehicles, spawning vehicles, elite/hero classes, objectives, support, team leaders, progressive content, and NPC enemies. It was meant to do that on a scale enjoyed by MMOs (which didn't happen for reasons that would be this post in size over again). Now, a lot of that framework is built and available, but the content isn't there. Things like terminators, heroes, techmarines, warpsmiths, possessed, dreadnaughts, bikes, variants of tanks, variants of transports, warlords, weapon customization, visual customization, the full list of weapons like thunder hammers, lightning claws, tankhammas, killsaws. I could go on with all the things that were meant to be in the game. The point is that there is a whole infrastructure built up for all these dimensions, that in coding still consume power/time, but there's no content. So as we play the core stripped down lobby shooter version of EC, the greater game is drawing away from it. That's why EC doesn't run like it was built as a lobby shooter, because it was built for more. Which brings up why I'm still here, and why even knowing what's wrong with the game I'm going to follow along. Because unlike Space Marine the game was designed to have more added to it. As the core problems are solved more time will be spent on content, and that content will be easier to implement because of the challenges already faced. I can already play as eldar and orks and some of the key classes within those factions, something no other game really offers. We have tanks and transports, which isn't available in other games. TEQs, special characters from the lore, bikes, more weapons are in production already. And as content is added variety of gameplay increases. Once there are multiple vehicles you can have tank warfare. When you have TEQs you can have elite only matches in tight quarters. There's a lot that can be done with this game. And this isn't to say the game isn't bad right now. No one is denying that. I have some issues as well, especially with the infographic that got released so close to Sep 23 that is so grossly exaggerated in content I'm actually stunned by it. Is it talking about the planned console release maybe? http://massivelyop.com/2016/03/22/eternal-crusade-preps-infographic-for-its-launch-plans/ But the game has potential. And yes it will be a long wait for it. But it's a wait that offers a lot more than anything else has offered. Or the entire thing gets canned and ported over to Eternal Crusade 2. I mean honestly that's what I would do. Straight up rob the game build as it is now, give it another three years in closed development to be ironed out and content created, build fresh trust and new hype as "EC done right!" and sell it all over again to the same suckers who spent $100+ the first time and will probably do it again. Figuratively milk the cow twice.
Anyone who has been on the forms since founders should know all of this, especially if they've been following closely. A big problem with this is that the devs aren't making a game they're used to making. Like Nathan and Miguel have said, they're an indie studio making a AAA quality game, this is probably the big reason why a lot of what they've done has been pretty.. bad. They're using a new engine they're not used to (they were working with Unity, but then switched to unreal4), they're also trying to make high quality visuals (which result in very poor performance) and they're struggling with overall gameplay that mixes multiple different mechanics and systems, while trying to balance them all. And to that I dont blame them for not being able to achieve something of high quality, being in development for at least 4 years now and not being close to finished, its obvious why. Consider what EC is now compared to what it was during the pre-alpha build. The pre-alpha was more inspired, clean, had a sense of direction, it wasn't being developed as a AAA game, more being developed to handle the big features that would eventually come in. Currently EC is anything but that. Its heavily rushed with many features being copied + pasted with some slight changes, leading to everything feeling and looking the same. If they should do anything, its get back to what the game used to be, clean up what they've got, not try to push this need for AAA quality bs which wont happen. Actually deliver a working game. Cut back on the bs, make major changes, do things that work and dont give half arsed solutions to basic problems.
Considering THQ's SM came out years ago and still looks better than EC even though its shitty texture mania. These people can grow the fuck up.
Sorry, we heard that a long time ago already and guess what; time really matters in an online game development - go figure why (Deathwing and tons of other games round the corner anybody?). Eerm, DoW series perhaps? And dozens of other shooters with various races, not necessearily orks but just other races...orks are just that. You are saying like it's something new or ground breaking, we already had it back in Red Orchestra 1 or all of Battle Fields. I would like to see that happen but only by a really pro studio and honestly I don't really believe this, never heard of something like that before (yeah, yeah Final Fantasy something - I know). Summing up, what you are trying to 'sell' is EC is being tailored up to be something more, something great... - not really, all the features you have mentioned would have been really great and ground breaking about 5 years ago, not now. Too late, too little - sorry, life moves on.
Oh thats an easy question. 1) I play a match. I get around 3000 to 5000 xp. not on top of the ladder but not the badest Then I go to the advancement tree. Want to buy something -> Not enough points. Ok play an other match. Can afford ONE upgrade. Looking on the whole tree. OMFG-> 10 matches and more for ONE upgrade ? So I am forced to play ~500 matches ? to get the same loadout I was used to use before that ###### release / wipes ? (maybe i would not be pissed if the wipe did NOT include XP and token without any reward) 2) Ok ok. Lets make a loadout. I have some nice founder / RTP weapons. really cool stuff. but wait. not enough LP. --> see 1 3) Ok just make a new char and play it. has only 750 LP used. But does not matter. Cool visuals but it is not in list. can only use .... predefined i assume -> 1 ? 4) ok founder and RTP is useless because it does not fit from the lp so lets try that ######## loot boxes. 12.000 token (3 matches ?) and i get ONE ####### scope. really ? means 500 more matches to get the stuff i need to competete ? 5) the great healing mechanics playing chaos or eldar as healer is fun. but as ork or lsm ? painfull. 6) melee thats just button smashing maybe to fast ? 7) one hit insta kill. (plasma ?) 8) complete useless tanks i liked the idea of tanks because i loved world of tanks. tanks on the road, infantry in the buildings sounded like a great concept. but what we got is ->tanks as taxi and free xp for las gunners. a joke. 9) the boxes. hu hu i am shooting from a box. meelee come catch me........ To summarize my major annoynace: Playing 300h and getting NOTHING for it after the wipe. (things avoiding the repeated grind from start) Random loot boxes Grind Gamemechanics in general Last but not least, you may ask why the hell i am playing that game (from time to time, cant play more then one or two matches before quitting) Because I invested 600+ US dollars (not that account) in that game. And I love warhammer 40k. So I still hope that this game MAY become something great in the far far future. But to be realistic : the chances are very very little. Forgive my bad english ^^ No I will NOT read any answers to my post. So save your time to conter argument me
This is another issue. Everyone who still supports the game(and the devs themselves) talks about the "potential" of EC. What they never mention is when that "potential" will manifest itself, and thus far there is nothing but a whole lot of "potential" in EC. That isn't keeping people interested, and it doesn't change the fact that right now the game is bad, and will be for the foreseeable future. You can't bank on future success if the groundwork isn't even there yet and nobody can say when any sort of serious improvement can be expected. We'll be seeing our first major content update Soon™, and we've heard nothing other than "it's got terminators...probably".
It's a generic third person shooter that isn't even a shooter because melee takes over everything. There is no content or anything to keep the game fresh either. It is just boring repetition of log in, hit battle now, win/lose, open loot boxes, rinse and repeat.
