In my opinion lot of the space marines of original legions who turned to chaos might have not lot to choose from. If your loyalty to your legion and primarch is gene based I think it is not much of a wonder why you would stay loyal to them even if you wouldn't agree personally with the direction legion turned to. I do imagine that you are more closer with your father than you are with your grandfather irl too.. And in this case your grandfather is a god like being that you most like haven't ever saw all talked to. Terra is a long way from were you are and your father and brothers are the closest thing you have for a family. So if you think it that way I think it is more understandable. And what comes for the different gods there might not have been much choice there nether. If you think the story of how the Death Guard became what they are now... During Horus heresy Calas Typhon later know as Typhus (my favorite character btw..) lead the Death Guard fleet to the warp in order to get the legion to the terra. But Typhon had been serving Farther Nurgle for long time before and this was just a scheme to turn rest of the legion. Legion and their primarch, Mortarion, found themselves trap in warp where Lord of Decay made mockery of their renown resilience. The legion were infected by destroyer plague and Nurgle's rot. In last ditch effort to safe his sons Mortarion made a pact with Father Nurgle and offered hes soul and legion to the ruinous powers. Legion was for ever transformed and Mortarion was elevated to daemon hood as Prince of Decay. And what came of Calas Typhon you ask? He was given the whole blessing of Nurgle and he became host of destroyer hive. Hes body virtually disappearing and becoming a host of disease and decay. Hence the name change to Typhus, the herald of the Nurgle and the host of destroyer hive.
I personally recommend the slaves to darkness series I know its warhammer fantasy but that trilogy shows you that the so called "bad" guys and "good" guys are no better than each other. Look at the sisters of battle with their "cleansing" all they are doing is appeasing khorne and slaanesh their zealous hatred and their enjoyment and disgust of purging heretics. Look at warhammer soulstorm when the sisters of battle beat the tau the cannoness offers the ethereal skull to the emperor. That skull is not going to the emperor. Its not some thing simple.
For me its boils down to choosing between to evils you've got the imperium of man who let's be honest aren't saints by any stretch of the imagination or chaos who is well chaos except unlike the Imperium where you pretty much have no chance of rising above your station with Chaos you do while a slim chance its still a chance
Your Imperium is not what it seems to be as you say it is. Your Imperium would no soon condemn your hero's to the blade for the actions that had to be taken to win. Like Huron the Blackheart. Or would you rather have the Imperium condemn those whose relics were taken from them by other Imperium scums for personal profit, like the Soul Drinkers. I would rather be a follower of chaos than be a slave to the Imperium that condemns its own. Chaos on the other hand gives you free chooses of which God to worship or you could worship them all. Your deeds are always praised by the Gods and your mere cultist group would have the highest honor if it disrupted the defense of a planet or some other great deed done.. Chaos cultist always except their fate and know that they will be rewarded for it in the end To finish this off, I'll quote a saying here. Cookies are the main reason for joining Chaos! They are so delicious! Have you ever tried Tzeentch’s Tentacle Cookies? They are so life changing experience that you would gladly abandon the false Emperor! Or perhaps Khorne's Blood Cookies? They taste like a fresh morning slaughter! What about some Nurgle's Rotten Cookies? So weird in many ways, yet ful of taste! And Slaanesh's Sexual Cookies? Well, the name speaks for itself!

Perhaps that´s what a fresh induct in some human Slaanesh-esque Cult is subjected too. For an Astarte like you or myself, reaching some form of euphoria is to literally grind somebody to dust/powder and snot that up your nose whilst simultaneously mutilating yourself as you listen to Justin Bieber. Yeah, I´ll take Nurgle, Khorne or joining the Chess Club of Tzeench, any day.
Yeah Slaanesh is about the last god I want to serve I'm more destroy the imperium and don't bother the giant gods that will make you into a rubber ball to play ping pong with on a whim type of guy
