I was reluctant to post this because the obvious answer is: I suck at bolter-ing. But typically I've completely given up on using the Bolter, I just always die. Everytime I am faced with (especially Xenos races) I go on a head to head face off, and I always die first. Then I started forcing myself to go through entire rounds as a Bolter marine (apologies to my team mates). And yes, I do get kills, but I'm realistic in understanding these kills are because I'm shooting a dude who's on his last leg, or I've unloaded half a clip into him while he's on a bio break. So I started adding things to my bolter: barrel, plus extended clip. I tried to find situations where I felt me and the opponent were fairly isolated. But I ALWAYS lose these stand offs. So let's just pretend I don't suck. What other factors could it be? I often strafe, I tried going purely for the headshot. What am I potentially doing wrong? Is there a preferred loadout for the Bolter? Armour? etc? I find the Bolter dude to be the iconic Space Marine, but I am so much better in Melee it doesn't make sense. I can and have got much better results and it doesn't make sense to me. One other question... my Ping is often 155 to the servers. Is that putting me at any disadvantage? I often feel like (not sure if this is true) that my dude registers 'two hits' and I have no armour health. I know I MUST be getting hit more than twice but by the time it's registering on the screen I see I'm pretty much a hairline away from death. Is this unusual? Or does everyone seem to register damage in a similar way? So before I put my Bolter guy away for the foreseeable future I just wanted to see if you guys had any advice, or something else I could change up.
Get a mag size mod and textured grip with cqc barrel and a/d spam shots at close range, the next step is to always get headshots on practically all your shots, if you start the duel you have some lenience here and bam you have practically mastered one of the strongest rifles in the game and will slay anything more often than not. I'm only rank 4 currently so I use red armour so I would say as long as you have armour and some durability wargear your good honestly, I even out preform Dire Avengers on my MoS Night Lord, that's less durability and a larger hit box than the Eldar yet I still win against them simply because the boltor is that powerful. You say you've been going for headshots with a/d spam so either it's you not using these mods mentioned above on the rifle or it's your connection, probably your connection as the boltor is hit harder than most with poor connection.
You are aiming for head shots chest shots are the most realible way to hit (not the fastest way to kil or the most effiecient ) also the hit being registered both for your self and others can be inflicted by lag and connection
First off I want to say you're doing the right thing. You're not blaming the game, you're not blaming your team, you're looking at what you can do better. I'm going to go through some some basic shooter stuff that maybe you've already done, but maybe you're in the position I was 10 years ago and you just don't know. We're all new at some point, and that's not a bad thing. Twitch Response Whether you're using a controller or mouse&keyboard, make sure your sensitivity is right for you. Step 1: Put your mouse in the center of your screen. Step 2: Pick a random spot on your screen (one that you can identify) Step 3: "Twitch" your mouse to that location. If you're short, increase your sensitivity. If you overshoot, decrease it. Bringing your sights on target as fast as possible is how you get the draw on opponents. As you play and get used to a game, work on fine tuning that motion. It'll help you in long range shooting, and allow you to play at higher sensitivities (which makes the travel time faster). Anecdotally: For a Call of Duty game on PS, first picking it up I'll get into it with a 3, and move to 4 pretty fast. I'll probably settle around 6, and if I get to a competitive level I'll play at sensitivity 8. What's most important is that your twitch response matches what you currently do, and then improve from there. Working the Corners Take a few hours off of the game, look up and research things like breaching and room clearing. You always want to pivot around a corner so that you expose as little as possible while having eyes downrange. Give yourself space from the corner, it'll help avoid melee-ambushes and AoE. This is like the mobile version of camping, but tactical and cool. Don't rush into places because "My team needs me!" You're no good to them dead. Work your angles, clear rooms before proceeding, don't forget to check your 6. Map Control You've played a strong melee game before by your own admission. Think about where you like to be on maps as melee, and don't be there as ranged. Work around them, control targets from the outside. Against other ranged players, path so that firefights happen at your range, and where you'll have cover. Take time in game to open up the map and look, think about where you died, where the guy who killed you was, and the route where you'll have the drop on them. I could probably write an essay about how top level players in shooters do the same sort of laning that you see in Moba's, and how to apply jungling tactics against them. I won't, because I have work to do. But think about where kills are made, and how not to be there. This is how I "got good". I didn't develop super reflexes or anything like that. I learned about shooter basics, I learned basic tactics, and I started playing smarter. Maybe you've already done all of this, in which case I hope someone else can benefit from it. But if you haven't it's a place to start. If you're looking for some secret combo of mods that puts you top of the scoreboard, I don't have anything like that.
Just going to throw in as well. Are you holding ctrl to actually aim down sights? Noticed an alarming amount of people who don't know how to do this. Considering there is an actual animation for it in game it's alarming the amount of people who just hipfire entire clips at me and barely take my armour off.
Some good responses. Thank you. I will definitely look into some of these things... Hold Ctrl down? No I have usually been hitting middle mouse button (slows movement but causes crosshairs to shrink (spread?) and then pull the trigger.
Because you have to point the bolter so the cross-hairs overlap with your target before firing. You can't just point in you're enemy's direction and expect to get a kill. Also giving the bolter's machine spirit a back rub never hurts.
If you want ad me on steam [XIII]Ephaïstos and if we meet online we can go in garrison and train a bit range vs range, range vs melee, melee vs melee. But first thing to remind with the game : Learning curve is hard.
I think I rebound this key then because yeah that's the one. I remember having a lot of trouble using middle click for it. Otherwise the only advice I can give is aim for chest/upper chest then let the recoil pull you up onto their head.
