Why did the devs turn off cross faction chat? Are they following new industry practices to build a better community by reducing "toxicity"? Until they (BE) tell us exactly their reasoning, the most logical thing to me is that it is due to the success that League of Legends experienced by limiting chat with enemy factions. Essentially this is becoming an industry standard since players cannot act responsibly with features like cross-faction chat time and again. Just by taking these steps they are likely saving money in customer support as well as attracting players who don't have the skin thickness, patience or tolerance for the sometimes trollish and offensive cross faction chat that from time to time yields beautiful sportsman like moments. Check out the video here: http://gdcvault.com/play/1017940/The-Science-Behind-Shaping-Player 6:41 Disabling Cross Team Chat Results Here are some of the highlights on that topic: Showing Toggle on option for All Chat The week before and week after cross faction chat was disabled More results after 4 months just from toggling off cross faction chat Final Take away notes Go watch the video, its interesting seeing the data and research behind this subject. If 40k EC does make a toggle for chat or if the community is still being toxic to our own teams we will hopefully see the next big addition of the Tribunal system or other tools to point out the toxic trash in the community. Last, I am in support of toggle since I did like cross faction chat even with the trolls and I think its an easy win for everyone but in the end it's a subject of interest since I deal with community management in multiple organizations. Alright, your turn. 1. What do you think of the research? 2. Do you think the devs are mirroring this practice? 3. Any other recommended reading or counter arguments at this level of research? 4. How has your experience been since enemy chat has been disabled?
I see barely any chat or even confirmation of anything in chat anymore. I'm lucky if I see even a "attack C" at the start. It feels dead.
The fact you side stepped everything in there and then make that statement despite my saying "Until they (BE) tell us exactly their reasoning, the most logical thing to me... " Just reinforces the fact you are just trolling. You obviously have no discussion points.
Real talk, couldn't this have been in the existing thread where we were discussing this? Why did this require it's own thread?
Its a separate discussion on the research from LoL about toxicity in reference to why our allchat was possibly disabled. While parallel in discussion it is more for the research behind it to see other evidence contrary to it or in support of it and the results of allchat being turned off from our experience.
I've been reported in league and muted for common support players questions, and made it to plat season one. It is a game where you will get banned for asking "could someone help with wards, I'm poor atm". So the unofficial motto was "don't talk if you want to play", since you would get reported for everything and the playerbase always voted to punish any report since they got paid to vote with the majority during tribunal days.
Mobas are an entirely different beast than shooters or any other game. Mostly because if you queue into a game and you're stuck with bad players, they can make your life a living hell both communication-wise and gameplay-wise until you leave. Which is unlikely for most players since leaving usually will penalize you instead. League of Legends has gone from a wild west sort of situation where Riot didn't give a shit to "everyone is afraid to even saying anything" because of the lengthy bans associated. The numbers you've showed just show that the % of offensive language and harassment dropped, but I assume that chat in general dropped significantly as well. That's what has happened to Eternal Crusade, every game is nearly ghost town, with the amount of talk down significantly. For a community based game based on teamwork and cooperation, this is a horrible situation. Keep in mind Eternal Crusade has literally no chat reporting system yet. I haven't seen anyone that warranted reporting/ignoring in the several months, so I don't even know if we have an ignore button yet. Also keep in mind - League of Legends only got away with removing global chat because it's f2p, and players can just make a new account to harass/abuse players if they want. Eternal Crusade is a $40 (soon to be $50) game, so people aren't going to call you the n-word and harass you as much as possible when a $40+ game license is at stake. To compare League of Legends, a f2p dota clone, to Eternal Crusade, a premium paid shooter, is apples to oranges. Hell, apples to potatos.
See that's good, that would go against that heavy handed moderation. Was that due to their tribunal system from your own team chat?
Yep, I made a point of never posting in anger on that game. Didn't help, still got banned. It was the most cancerous piece of shit I ever put 2000 hours into and I was so relieved when I earned a dota 2 beta key off a 1v1 that I uninstalled that day. There is a difference in moderation and that cancer.
