i agree, to an extend. depends on the narrative. wh40k is kind of cheesy (the positive way), it is over the top epicness with space vikings, crusaders, fanatics, elves, orks... . especially the warhammer universe - like many rpg (except witcher and comparable universes) - gets its taste because of its stereotypes (imagine the stereotypes go poof and gone, aweful!). all factions have a general mood, which may sound superficial, but is still true. zealous imperium, nihilistic chaos, mourning eldar, brutish (and funny) orks... the stereotypes in warhammer 40k are well done without rectricting its lore, at no point are they restricted by baseline-stereotypes of genres of fantasy and sci fi . take the black legion, they are nuanced more subtle than other warbands, but retain their stereotype and that of its faction. their traits are not specific weapons or vehicles, but how they "do stuff", their mindset. flexibility, adaptation (like chaos!), sluggish but efficient cunning. they are pillagers and scavengers, they take what they can, from allies and foes alike, copy anything that is worth having. somehow chaotic, somehow focused. weapon-usage is blurred, hard to read, because they do and take anything, that works. you can't define them clearly, because they adapt (adapting tactics) but still they retain some focus, a greater goal (overarching strategy) in stark contrast the cult-troops are more obvious and in your face. their gayish colours and somehow one-sided trait scream "uniqueness", to the point where some/many (me) prefer chaos undivided. similiarly to how some people (me) dislike raven guard, space wolfes and others, (to me) those chapters feel diluted, and/or boring, because anyone can know, what to expect (khorne berzerkers), because its blatantly obvious. edit: i'm just shedding light onto the other side of the medallion you pointed to, i'm not trying to negate your statement, its meant supplementaryly.
oh yeah, i'm seeing you edited your post even before i posted mine. yeah, i can understand that. it comes down to personal preference and to the question, if something is restricted by the stereotype (making it boring) or if the stereotype adds something to the table (or something different adds to the stereotype). funny that you mention the khornate berzerkers aswell, fun fact, while i did criticize them, from all of the cult troops they are my favoured, even if my favourite god is tzeentch!
Ye i agree with what your saying but The Black Legion just doesn't really inspire me to want more. The Ultramarines have the same problem. I think a chapter can be kinda cliché and still really interesting which is why I read a lot of the lore but them two never manage it for me, even the Mark of Calth novel suffered slightly for being about Ultramarines. Still a great read and it's always nice to read about heresy events. I imagine there's people that feel the same about the World Eaters or the Ravens and I love them 2 legions
I am a sorcerer of Tzeentch and a child of the Thousand Sons... However, I may serve the Warband Alpha Legion or Iron Warriors. I would prefer to be part of the Alpha Legion as they are shrouded in mystery and that information would be most gratifying to my mind...
ya but is that long enough to choose a faction that has a chance to crush the marines and eldar (don't really care for the orks they might be helpful in our fight) also im not sure what class to choose and what not
Im gonna go with the Iron Warriers if I decide to try chaos at some point unless Thousand Sons apear before that
