For your information, time travels faster in the eye of terror then in real space. While it seems to have been 10,000 years in real space, the Chaos Legions in the warp would have had probably 250 years or possibly far less, since the warp manipulates time in a weird manner. It's commonly mentioned in many novels how Chaos Marines remember the Horus Heresy happening only centuries/hundreds of years ago. Also, the imperium outnumbers us currently. It's crazy to kill off the First Founding Chaos Legions, because they are what make up the bulk force of the Chaos Marines.

What was done to my brothers was to keep them alive and it destroyed us but horus sent the wolves our way. We maybe hated but we are stronger now then ever before plus half of our legion was not with us when we were attacked. We still have full battle brothers out there. We will be whole one day soon.
