IIRC, the Necrons apparently killed off all of the C'Tan. Because suddenly the Ultramarines resurrecting the Nightbringer is no longer canon. So I'm not sure if the Void Dragon is even a thing anymore.
That would make it even more better! They kill off all the C'tan then void dragon wakes up and goes after the necrons and imperium was like ohhshit that was what we were worshiping as the machine spirit?!? That would let people make new tech and Humanity would once again be on the rise.
Not sure if the Cult of the Omnissiah would be cool with worshiping the Void Dragon once they realized it was a powerful Xenos and not a divine entity, but I'd sure like to see IG with Gauss Rifles
Ecclisiarchy purges the machine cults and people become free to engage in scientific collaboration. The age of Discovery shall be upon them~!
That is really confusing me cause GW have recently re-printed "Nightbringer", so it is obviously still canon but contradicts the Codex.
With respect to advancing the storyline, how about going backwards for a change? There's ten thousand years of history to explore yet until a few years ago no one was even bothering to truly explore the events and figures of the Horus Heresy in depth. Some of the best books we've seen recently did exactly this, heading back and writing an extremely good and well detailed account of the Badab War. Just for starters, we do have a point where an entire Segmentum succeeded from Terra's rule which very little has been done with. It's Games Workshop. So long as money is involved they seem not to care. Mat Ward has managed to retcon most of the Ultramarines series into oblivion after McNeil tried to perform damage control to the chapter, yet they keep selling copies of the Second Omnibus. Not to mention Ben Counter's Grey Knights trilogy, Antony Reynolds' Word Bearers Trilogy, The Soul Drinkers saga, Gav Thrope's Path of the Eldar, potentially Steve Parker's Deathwatch, Sandy Mitchell's Caiaphas Cain series and more novels than I can count.
Think to keep people more interested need to move to another Millennium and this Millennium will be the deciding factor whether the forces of chaos and Imperium and all faction go full out but the tau can collect the pieces because they are to busy on there side of the universe and but that can be a good reason why the Ultramarine are always never to be around when needed the most.
Maybe not in our lifetime! But who knows, maybe youll be able to watch your Great-Great- Grandkids playing Warhammer 41k lol.
Look up the creation of the Sons of Medusa Chapter, they were created basically by somthing call the Morea(?) Skism where 3 Techmarines thought they could devine the future from the Astronomican. The belief ran rampart and almost started a civil war but, before they were killed, one of the major things they predicted was that the Cults of Mars and the Imperium Ecclisiarchy would combine into one human religion.
