Commanders will need tools to coordinate and plan their strategy, so this is a must. And Titans...Titans are a must, but they must not be easy to field in battle...maybe by a combination of assets, acquired across several campaigns, and always in limited numbers and uses...I would love to drive around a Imperator class titan...but... P.S. EL HALLUF...that was once upon a time a nice map...
Titan's are not going to happen. I don't want to put you down but they're just not. I've already said why in a couple of other threads but I'll paste it in here as well. What you have just described is a separate game. Titan vs Titan combat instantly renders every single person on the battlefield who is not a princepes of anything larger than a Warhound insignificant. An event like that is a separate game because it renders everything Titans. This is an Infantry based MMOFPS, tanks themselves are probably going to be scarce. Believe me I want a Titan combat game, but you can't put it in this MMO. It just doesn't fit. I can't see people hanging around after they've been trodden on a couple of times by a Titan. If you want to have Titan vs Titan combat you have to make everyone Titans, hence you need a separate game. I think the game'll be good enough to get people to come back without having to resort to that. Basically the Titans would have to be underpowered compared to the lore to make it fair. (They don't annihilate everything in sight.) Which is going to piss people off. They would still be overpowered in terms of in game power. (They annihilate almost everything in sight.) Which is going to piss people off. Only a few people are going to be able crew the damnable thing. Which is going to piss everyone else off. Peoples home territory would get invaded. Regardless of if a mission is issued to do that. You've given a handful of people the power to do it, so they will. This will piss people off. The factions aren't balanced in terms of population. So the largest faction can just mob the smallest faction and nick their Titan. Which is going to piss people off. A large number of people are probably not going to be interested in Titan warfare (casual and not hardcore gamers). They will still get randomly annihilated by these giant metal behemoths. This will piss off more people. The devs will have to spend time programming this into the game rather than doing other things. This will piss off the majority of hardcore fans. This will be hellish to implement, simple urban terrain is taxing on servers and clients, when you have thousands of people fighting over a bit of terrain that is moving and fighting itself it is going to cause tremendous lag issues. This will piss off the people who are on the other side of the map trying not to get involved and the people running around it's legs. The idea of supporting Titans on foot and in tanks is ridiculous. They are nothing to Titans, the only thing they are good for is attacking the enemies who are doing exactly the same thing. If the Titans are supposed to be roughly equal then they will be evenly matched and it will come down to the footsloggers anyway. This will piss off the people in the Titans. If it comes down to a footslogging contest 9/10 the numerically superior force will win. So basically the faction that has the highest population will almost always win. This will piss of almost everyone at some point or another. Conclusion? Titans will only serve to piss off almost the entire playerbase. One other thing though, everyone almost always jumps to warlord class or bigger whenever some mentions titans, the only feasible titan is a warhound. Even that's still stretching it. They'd have to be rarer than the emperor's smile to even think about making sense. But they normally work in packs of two's or three's so it still doesn't make any sense. I think that's everything. Anyway, sorry about the long post but I disagree with titans being in this game. They need their own one. (Not aimed at you but at everyone on this thread who wants titans.) [Edit: I don't know why that bit's in bold, it shouldn't be.]
I want the landscape to mirror the battle that is taking place, in PS2 we had vast stretches of map that was just bare, a few hills here and there. You'd never would of thought that a mass conflict was taking place, we need to see blown out structures, vehicles blown to pieces, stuff that makes feel you're actually in a war.
Flamethrowers, man. Planetside 2 had flamethrowers for their MAX units in the betas but they were removed for launch. My precious flamethrowers...
I was probably not clear about my opinion on titans, I completely agree that player driven or controlled titans are a huge problem, mostly for the same reasons you describe, especially the bigger classes of titans. Imperator class, for example, carries a full company of space marines IIRC, that are actually nothing compared to the weapons, you just can't balance that... (that was the ...but... part)... On the other hand, such a iconic part of the W40K universe should be a part of the game, and there are other ways to make a appearance. Maybe as part of VERY special events as NPC's, or even as wreckage or a titan manufacture facility as a objective, just to give a little glimpse...I hope you get what I'm saying... And indeed...a Titan specific game would be the best option, maybe something like the mechcommander series...
I would like the game to have: All of the First founding space marine legions as playable. Contingency plan for a complete f2p market, refusing to p2p the advanced races Warband porting, to get your allies to you faster in order to prepare for combat 30k relic gear, because some of that old school vibe stuff is just awesome looking
and here I thought WH40K EC is going to be B2P so if it is those people playing f2p orks should have nothing too complain about
