Yea, that article is with a well respected media outlet, and majorly burns them. Avoiding that would, all in all, be a good idea indeed
So they not only take 500 dollarydoos of your money but also take half a year to actually spray paint your giant robot the color you paid that 500 for? Ouch.
I say... alternate option R9-294:33. Inquisitorial Mandate of interface. Subject matter is classified.
I used to like MWO, I in fact used to support it, I am a big fan of Battletech and I used to spend countless hours as a kid playing Mechwarrior 2 and as a young teen playing Mechwarrior 3. I played MWO up until April this year, I quit because I felt disgusted being involved with a game where the marketing team tries to squeeze money out of something to the point where people feel exploited. Truth was I used to think WoT was bad... until I saw how they did things in MWO, then I felt it wasn't bad at all. I am all for supporting developers, I am all for paying for the games I play, even if they are free or buy to play, because I believe in supporting development and paying for the use of dedicated servers, for myself and to support people who want to play but can't afford to pay for the use of the servers. Most people kind of have an idea of what they think things which are digital are actually worth and feel terrible when they feel they are getting ripped off, or denied something cool simply because they can't afford to buy it because it's too expensive. I actually used to communicate directly with the community manager for the game and I used to hang out with all the pro twitch players in MWO, I was in the top 10% of the elo bracket of the game early this year, I was playing with all the "jump snipers" who thought they were good at the game because they played jump jet equipped mechs and spent all their time firing off ER PPCs at people on top of hills. But I always played Laser boats, Dakka boats and light hunters; I found extreme joy in two shotting jump snipers with my laser boats. But as I said, it gave me direct contact to people of importance in the community, I constantly forwarded my concerns, I also forwarded my concerns about how jump sniping required no skill. In both cases they ignored my opinions and openly complained about my opinions and concerns about the game (without actually mentioning it was me who stated them). Of course their fanbois defended their "justifications"; Not sure why they didn't ban me or put me on ignore or remove me from friends for my complaints, they just were polite to me and simply ignored my opinion. I don't know why... I think it's because it's in my nature to be critical but not abusive or offensive in my criticism, that's likely why. (Although it could also be because I was a paying customer and I was in the top 10% elo bracket as well... maybe.) *shrug* I used to highly dislike the way Perfect World did their Monetisation system, but after a while I realized the system isn't that bad at all by comparison. Although I still find the idea of paying $3 for a respec to be on the "questionable" side of things, but with that said, zen can be bought with in game currency as well. In Neverwinter for example, it's cheap as chips because the game literally throws piles of Astro Diamonds at you like candy, 1 cent = 1 zen = 400 astro diamonds and you can make 2000 to 4000 a day from dailies which is 20 to 40 zen, 1 week = 1 free respec without paying $3.
The sad thing is I don't think the MWO dev's give a damn. They are just trying to milk the player base until the game dies. It's too bad, because Battletech was a great IP back in the day.
I'm perfectly fine with 'F2P' games as long as they are only charging for cosmetic items or boosts that allow you to gain rewards faster.I have a problem with games that put huge restrictions on the F2P experience which forces people to either quit in disgust or fork over some cash. A F2P model that I like: Marvel Heroes Buy heroes with cash or earn them through collecting in-game currency. Special costumes and exp boosts offered in the store. New heroes and content are released on a regular basis for free. A F2P model that I hate: Neverwinter I haven't played this since release but their prices were absolutely insane. $10 for more bag space, $40 for a mount, etc.
This is suicide. They'll lose their player base and all they'll have left is the one person stupid enough to fork out $500 USD for a gold plated mech. He'll spend the rest his days roaming around an empty battlefield. No enemies. No combat. No fun. Just The Emperor's New Clothes.
Gaining tactical flexibility by spending real life cash is pay to win. Even if the same flexibility could also be earned in game. If a cash bought service has stats differences so "minor" that it can't legitimately affect gameplay, then imho the stats differences' only purpose is as a sales gimmick for would-be pay-to-win players.
