What Has Behaviour Learned From Planetside 2's Mistakes?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Benny, Jun 23, 2014.

  1. Plus the PsWin in PS2, 'oh look! I got the drop on this veteran! *shoots into his back, only for him to turn around and kill me* 'How'd that happen!?' *looks at buyable permanent health upgrades* 'Oh.'

Nanoweave has to be bought with certs.

I'm assuming there is some way to buy certs with real money, or at least buy a way to earn them faster.

You can buy XP boost but not certs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but XP unlocks certs, and premium members get extra passive certs (I'm reading off a wiki now, so who knows how accurate it is).

This feels like the old League of Legends argument of "you can't buy runes" (but you could buy an IP booster to earn enough points to get runes faster).

Subscribers get 50% extra xp, and thus get certs faster. Passive certgain is the amount of certs you get on login, depending on the time you were offline. Non-subcribers get 12 max, subscribers get 48 max.
A newly released weapon costs 1000 certs, and Nanoneawe has 5 levels that have to be bought with certs, and with each level the price goes up.

Non-subscribers can still buy boosters to get 50% extra xp (during events a 6 month booster for 30 bucks can be bought).

Do note, Planetside 2 is Free-to-play with mictronsactions, Eternal Crusade will be buy-to-play with microtransactions.

Right, I forgot about it, everyone got 12 passive certs at day I think and premium was 36 or something like that. Not a big deal IMO, to many cheesy ways to farm certs in PS2.

What kind of microtransactions will be in this game though?

QoL? Cosmetics? Get RP faster through boosts? Buy weapons with RL money that you can still get for RP? Planetside 2 has literally all of those.
  9. From the founders program so far we have "premium" heroes, vehicles, and weapons. A newsletter this year suggested we would also see "convenience" items like grenades, ammo, etc. in the founders store. We can hope this kind of unlocked content is balanced, and remains exclusive to the founders program, but we've not been made any promises about the latter.

(Anecdotal evidence incoming) Every time my guild thinks about playing Planetside 2 again, it's the microtransactions that turn us off. Ditto nearly every f2p game out there, especially those from SOE. The founders program today has done nothing to quell people's fears about EC's cash shop, but here's hoping they truly avoid p2w, not just the most narrow of interpretations.

TL/DR: I'm tired of being nickled and dimed and I'm holding out hope bEhaviour leaves that firmly behind after the founders program.

So much nonsense in this thread.

Planetside 2 has not failed. It generates a good profit for SOE. It is an attractive gateway game into the SOE network (remember that SOE membership now gives you membership to ALL games SOE has on offer). It also provides battles on a scale that no other FPS title on the market can match.

Planetside 2 is NOT an MMORPG. It an FPS. The reason there is no story or progression is because it is a multiplayer FPS. Its like saying that COD or Battlefield multiplayer suck because there is no story in the multiplayer modes.

A good FPS does NOT need many 'content' updates. How many times do you think de_dust has been played by a typical Counterstrike player? Would you rather pay for map packs? Is that what you want when you ask for new content? Planetside 2 has a huge playing area. Any one base would be the equivalent of a multiplayer map in most FPS titles. Most FPS games will have you play round after round as either one side or the other in the same small maps, with a limited number of maps on the rotation. PS2 however has you fighting over these small areas in completely different ways each time - against different numbers of opponents, attacking or defending against attacks from very different directions, with a different strategic balance driving the importance of the battle. If you get bored of an area you can go fight elsewhere on the continent, or even in another continent entirely. The battles also dont end after an arbitrary time limit. Battles in PS2 can last for hours upon hours, going back and forth with each side fighting for every inch of ground.

Planetside 2 is NOT pay to win. If you suck at FPS titles you will suck at Planetside 2 no matter how much money you pay. If you suck at working together with people you will suck at Planetside 2. Most of the starting weapons are arguably some of the best weapons in the game. If you pay real cash this is what you can get:
    • Membership - gives you a few store credits each month, game store discounts, double XP weekends, and accelerated cert (experience) gain within the game itself. It also gives you membership benefits in ALL other SOE games.
    • Boosts - for accelerated experience gain within the game itself.
    • Cosmetic items - only available for store credits (real cash).
    • Weapons - these are all weapon side grades. For example, a gun that has a larger bullet spread (less precise) but that does more damage. A gun that has a lower ROF but higher damage per bullet. A rocket launcher that can lock onto targets but that does less damage on hit and/or allows you to carry less ammo than normal. ALL weapons can be unlocked with in-game experience. Weapons vary in cost from $2.5o to $10 real cash.
    • Weapon scopes - these can now be unlocked with real cash as well as the normal in game experience points. They cost a minimal amount either way.
Eternal Crusade will be much like Planetside 2 in a lot of ways.
    • Factions will fight over a huge open world for control of territory.
    • Controlling territory will give resources. Resources are used to buy consumable items in the game. In Planetside 2 there are different resource types to buy vehicles, aircraft and infantry consumables (eg. grenades)
    • Real cash can be used to buy cosmetics or to buy weapon side grades. All weapons that are not purely cosmetic will also be available for players by playing the game.
    • EC has 'Hero' characters. PS2 has 'MAX' units.
    • You create a character. You log into your character and can spawn as any of a number of classes each time you die. Each class can be kitted out individually, and customised individually with cosmetic items/weapons. Purchases you make for one character can be used with any compatible class that character can spawn, but cannot be used for other characters on the account. Note that Planetside 2 does actually have some generic items that when purchased are available to all characters on the account - we dont know if EC will also have any such generic items.
I am hopeful that EC will emulate PS2 in a lot of ways. It is a great template to work from.
