What does this game do right?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by MajorRichardHead, Sep 20, 2016.

  1. So just because I said I had fun in the beta makes you pull this out of your ass? But yes Battlefields gunplay is definitely better. And more realistic gunplay doesn't equal good gunplay. It's something completely different.

Doesn't change the fact the whole melee system is crap. Despite a year of tweaking and fiddling they still haven't got it to work properly.

Is that so? What is EC supposed to be then?

Siege is a game mode not a map. I'll give that siege is a nice mode in theory, but Harkus isn't a good map.

Yeah and making wargear a tedious grind, while the RT weapons and armor pieces sit right there in your inventory ready for purchase totally isn't meant to make people buy stuff :)

    In order;
•not even vaguely well balanced in the current state, and has never been
•Planetside, Battlefield and Battlefront all have combined forces. Melee is ass in this, not sure why you'd praise it.
•Planetside 2 has jump packs and chainblades
•There's more to 40k than Grey: The setting. And devs have already stated we won't be seeing any exotic flora or landscapes beyond Drab McDrabtown.
•They do communicate, and promptly disregard what we say.

I think a lot of the Warhammer fanboys need to really objectively look at this game. Go play other games. Go play Planetside 2, Chivalry, Mount and Blade, Space Marine, Dawn of War, Dark Souls, Battlefield, Insurgency, Warthunder (not World of Tanks cuz that game is trash), Gears of War, Mass Effect, etc. You will notice things that the above games do really well that kept people playing for awhile. They have their flaws, sure. But what a good game dev does is take stuff that's good from those games and incorporate it into their own.

This game has "promise" but its missing the mark in a lot of areas. The move to put in auto-aim in a fast paced shooter is killing it. Auto-aim has no place in a modern shooter ever. Period. Even for melee. In Dark Souls it works because the combat is A LOT slower. There is also a lot of BLOCKING that takes place. BLOCKING. ****BLOCKING****** something that this game lacks. There's shields sure, but only one class gets them. Dbash isn't really a parry and its slow and bad and can be dodged too easily.

So ya, the core game mechanics are missing. They have a 'foundation' on which to build a game. But it still needs to be built. Ya it needs polish on what it has, but it also doesn't have enough. Its missing a solid core game. Right now its a hectic frenzy of a lobby shooter with not much teamplay. They tried to force teamplay down people's throats with suppression and squad leaders, but all people do is join up in a 10 man squad so they can all respawn at the Rhino. And then of course redeploy on the point if its getting taken. Its dumb.

The game lacks a "core" element to all of its gameplay and isn't doing anything special or different that other games haven't already done (and done better than EC). :<

    I agree.

NZ$350. I gave Behaviour my money for an idea. I waited and watched for 2+ years for a 'Space Marine (the game)' combat system, the developers telling the ones invested, this game is completely different, there nothing else like like. Even though what I stated above was true, I waited. The game changed, the allegations of a rushed release came about, the game came out... i played. for weeks i scraped together a pathetic amount of 'Req' to buy things... I tried to see the good on this product. Everyone talked, "oh its going to be great when this is fixed, when that is added"... wheres the fixes, wheres the passion project that was promised? (not theorized, promised). A lie is a lie. as it stands, this game is a lie.

What does Eternal Crusade do right?

Choice of IP is mwah!; perfection.
They nailed the art aesthetic of 40k.
The sound design is pretty decent.
I'm not offended by the music.
It includes a surprising array of weapons for four very different factions.

That said, it does a lot of things wrong.

    The net code is awful.
The melee system is both uninspired in design and unfun in practice.
Most of the weapons have terrible accuracy.
Vehicles have wonky physics and bounce around like kiddie cars.
PvE mode is basically in technical alpha.
Map design is so bad that it has been known to cause cognitive dissonance in people who work in civil engineering or architecture.

Just to be clear, I do play this game and I enjoy it (sortof). I just can't recommend it to anybody, including my friend whom I bought a copy for (!), because the game experience vacillates between 'I wish this worked properly' and 'I can't believe this is working the way they intended'.

When Melee hit detection actually works and the lag gods are smiling upon me, JPA is just amazingly fun.

JPA is like a stealth class without stealth:

Ideal scenario: (most matches I get a few kill sprees using this 4 step method)
    1. Plan our path to our target and traverse the environment to a vantage point with an unexpected angle of attack to descend upon our enemy.
    2. Take our target unawares in a howling storm of steel, blood, viscera and death
    3. Weave in, out and around multiple targets, causing chaos and confusion distracting the enemy so our allies can advance (and maybe take a few targets with us on our escape route)
    4. Re-fuel, heal up and and re-engage, repeat step 1
  10. Nothing is done right, because nothing is actually finished.

The only parts "done right" are a few areas on some maps where the game gets intense as hell and this is mostly just fortress maps.
