    Underwater battles anyone?

Or maybe a star fort battle once in a while?

We got all kinds of possible battle situations when it come to warhammer 40k. Because War.....War can always change. you know since......Tzeentch and all. Yeah i went there and i regret nothing!
    Galen and Ulfgard like this.
  2. Well, for as much as I hate to agree with a minion of the god of change... I'd be up for some more exotic locales. Space stations and underwater ops are pretty nifty. I'm kinda concerned about where you'd find water, though, because depending on how far into the biomass reclamation stage the 'Nids got, the large bodies of water could actually have started boiling away by now.

Also, since Erobar suggest stuff under the water.... what about stuff on top of it? Specifically, the potential for naval operations between continents. That's an element that seems to be largely neglected in games of this (and closely related) genres. And I was always kind of confused that in all the 40K stuff I read, no ships or anything like that. I never quite figured out why.

Mechanically, it would take some doing, but it could have some pretty significant benefits. Obviously, any sort of naval power would represent serious investment of resources; deciding to throw resources at ground forces or a navy could open up more gameplay options while encouraging the need to balance a faction's investments. Coastal installations (fortresses, gun batteries, etc.) could make naval assaults difficult in some locations, while they would be more vulnerable to attacks by land, and vice versa-- some installations might be more vulnerable to attacks from sea at the expense off their vulnerability to attacks by a naval force. What's more, it wouldn't necessarily screw anyone over too badly, because naval operations would be obviously limited to coastal areas; land-locked territories would be unaffected by the inclusion of navies, aside from having potentially fewer resources to sink into them. Ship-to-ship combat would also be a unique battlefield opportunity, where assault marines/stormboys/raptors/[whatever the Eldar are getting as theirs-- not sure if warp spiders are confirmed or not] could really shine, while heavy support classes work from higher elevations on a ship to eliminate hostiles.

Putting naval combat in the game would be challenging, but imo it would be good to add depth, increase diversity, spread out resource expenditures, and generally make the game more interesting. I doubt this will make it in, but it's a bit of wishful thinking on my part and I'm curious to see what the rest of you think of the idea.
    RedDeath and Erobar like this.
  3. Should definitely put a tonne of effort into the world. Specially with your idea about calling in your position via close landmarks, that would be cool
  4. Yeah I honestly don't think there will be much of a water aspect in the game.

Agreed. A recent interview mentioned Port cities that connect the continents as being surrounded on three sides by water. This was mentioned specifically as a defensive feature, so I'm guessing that we won't be able to enter the water at release.

Are there even boats in 40k?
  7. Steelhide Steelhide Well-Known Member

Probably Ofc. Though not many novels or stories about water, if any at all.
  8. A few books mention the imperial guard using boats belonging to the pdf but i don't think i've seen mention of the guard actually owning any of them.
  9. Please god, don't have there be underwater fighting....
    .....please

I have read a story where Rafen had to fight a Tyrannid beast underwater, so its not implausible!

Oh and I can't even begin to regale you of the countless stories of Space Wolves fighting Kraken monsters on Fenris!
