Having a 40K game with such potential is a gift. Be grateful the devs are creating a MMO, not whether it has RPG elements or not. We all know this game will be great no matter what. If this game sells well, maybe they will make an RPG. We can only cross our fingers! Glory be with you!
Not to mention that it's easy to have a shooter that rolls dice for weapons. Call of Duty is one example, along with Halo, as both utilize hitscan to some degree. Although I hope with Eternal Crusade they forgo hitscan, as it can lead to general wonkiness that is inflated by lag or connection errors. Thus you end up with one guy wondering how in the hell did he get killed by a bolt round that made a ninety-degree turn because his hitbox moved ahead of him without his direction.
That's pretty much what I'm hoping for. A shooter akin to Planetside 2 (where you can enter/exit vehicles at will, especially), but with RPG elements such as acquiring customizable gear with stats that make you more effective. While I'd definitely take part in and enjoy "PvE content" with NPC's and/or quests, I by no means require it.
Ah, definitions. TO WAR. "An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded." I'd love to see an actual MMORPG set in the W40K universe - that is very unlikely. It would take forever to do well and slightly less long to do not-well. I hope for an MMO game set in the W40K universe that is fun - more fun than Space Marine MP - and engrossing to level up in. Regardless what someone else decides it is termed.
I'm ok with little to no story. Make my own story and entertainment, just want a 40k sand box to play in.
I was going to point out that this game is going to be an MMO in it's truest sense (massive multiplayer online) but other people beat me to it. I find it both amusing and annoying that people confuse mmos with mmorpgs when mmorpgs are a subgenre of mmos. I very early on had the idea that they would be looking to make a game more akin to a fusion Planetside 2 and Space Marine. And IMO this is the best way to make a 40K game and i feel a traditional MMORPG ala WoW, etc would not work very well. Maybe that's just me being biased because i don't like the majority of mmorpgs. Also i want to point out that in truth all video games are RPGs even fps. Like let's say you're playing Halo or CoD or whatever you're putting yourself directly in the shoes of these characters. You see though their eyes and you are the one who has the most control over what they do. This works for strategy games as well like civ 5 you take up the job of this great leader who is supposed to well lead your people to victory, etc. TL;DR All video game in some shape or form are roll playing games but more so for some then others.
To me that would be a great idea. If they can incorporate some of the elements from Guns of Icarus, Chivalry, and Mount & Blade that would be epic.
I agree with you as well. I enjoy and LOVE Planet Side, as it has given me a great Outfit for the past 14 years. But it has been lacking with the rewards/consequences for combat. Even the voice over the game channel that says: "TRY HARDER, We won!, We Lost, You're Doing Great!" Does NOT inspire confidence in me or anyone else. It's more annoying than helpful. But THAT SAID. The more endearing and memorable moments of Planet Side and Planet Side 2 have always been the battles and comradely of my squad/platoon/outfit friends. We've had many epic moments in the game from fights to WTF and ROTFLOL moments. Those are the real highlights of the game more than the resources in the game. One of the BIGGEST problems with games, specifically MMOS today is that a lot of gamers are kids who run the "One Man Army" routine. They don't play well with others. They Always go solo. And if they DO run a team they blame them for random crap which leads to a lack of interest in the game itself. I'm sorry I believe I've gotten off point with this.
