That is actually the size of a single continent so, still quite large, not to mention the continents are going to be realistic and not just squares.
One thing to think about with that "increased travel speed"... what happens when you go over a hill, or hit a rock/tree? I hate to keep pulling from planetside, but my god.. some of those vehicles behave TERRIBLY when they go to fast. The ATV's are a nightmare if you hit a bump weird. The big transport bus is also pretty rough if you hit some odd terrain. I think having "super speed" would potentially be detrimental in your ability to "safely" traverse some more exotic landscape formats.
Time would differ because chaos plague marine for example is slower than the rest of the pack so it would take longer and it goes back to the speed thing like an agiltiy bonus in how fast you can move jump packs and vechiles probally should have an increase agility bonus because it would make a little sense
Drive more carefully then. It's not the game's fault if your poor driving ends your Rhino up in a ditch. On the topic of your example, PlanetSide 2's vehicles are poorly designed and look like what a child thinks of those vehicle types. All PlanetSide 2 ground vehicles handle like shit. The Lightning is the absolute worst. Let's have a fast vehicle which is segmented in two (why), has no ground clearance, completely enclosed tracks (meaning slopes are difficult to traverse), no gun stabilization (Seriously this is late WW2 technology, why no stabilizer), and a long wheel base. Let's also reverse the controls when you go backwards. Combine the elements of this poor design and you have what has to be the worst tank ever made in a game. Oh look it's stuck again. SOE is incompetent. Here is a fan made Prowler for the game, imagine if that game looked like this.

That is not fan-made. That is official concept art. And the Lightning's awesome. So much better than the turretless super slow projectile speed Magrider we get.
even then, I think the OP's idea of choosing to sacrifice offensive abilities on a vehicle for greater speed would still be a useful and good idea
Was thinking about this earlier.. I really hope they have a decent balance between Tank Power vs Infantries ability to do something about it. Nothing gets more frustrating when you start getting destroyed by a tank and have absolutely no recourse to even attempt to do anything about it without having to spawn another vehicle... random thought flash: Assault Marines with Melta Charges? That'd be epic.
