This may prove to be a treacherous path... I'm not entirely sure this is a sure-hit melee system for a universe as brutal and unforgiven as WH 40k. Lets hope they tweak it enough to be faster than it actually is in any of these games they are taking inspiration of.
Probably it would be wise to see what they can implement in Eternal Crusade before rushing to play M&B. Any M&B demo (original, warband, or fire and sword) would suffice, since the melee more or less is the same in all three. Just to check out how the basic combat works, like attacking and blocking in which direction with one handed, two handed, and weapon+shield combinations.
I would like a dark soul melee system but simply space marine and PS2 put together would be nice een though we have to be realistic, we wont have a complex melee system because even if you try to block another stupid ork is going to back stab you, but at least a good melee system for duels (duels would not be instanced but player decide to do one if they want and exterior players could still shoot them)
Dear God, I hope not. Yes, it takes skill to use directional blocks and attacks, but movement is completely seperated from these things. It's basically just the fish slapping dance. Imagine a baseball player trying to swing a bat while running in place; it's just stupid. Dark Souls or WH40k: Space Marine did melee combat much better; you have to plant your feet for an attack and take into consideration the time you need to attack and the potential movements of your opponent to counter. If I see people with chainswords hopping around like they're on pogo sticks during combat, I'm going to be massively disappointed.
get Warband it has a lot more amazing mods for it than F&S also it's MP(if you're interested) is still active. never played Dark Souls so no idea how the melee works in it but i personally love M&B's directional combat system. that, somehow combined with heavy and weak attacks would be crazy awesome.
I think using Chivalry's melee combat system as a foundation for EC is a good step. Obviously they can tweak it to make the combat system faster than Chivalry, but the idea of directional attacks/blocks I personally like the idea of. The melee combat in WH40K:SM was 'ok' for what it was though. Fast paced and furious which is what you'd expect from WH40K. It would be a hard balancing act though as they need to weave ranged/melee combat together so that one class type doesn't always dominate.
