Needs to be at the start man. Just make one more and instead of being just a post by post of starting with why they should make it a certain way, you could just have a poll asking would you like the games combat mechanics to be similar to "X" & "Y" or more like a standard MMO. You could also specifically go into all these game you mention and make several posts. Do one that asks how should basic swings work, another on blocking, parrying, counter, dodging, ones one different weapons (pls stick to lore i.e. choppas/Klaws for orcs Chainswords/Power swords for SMs etc.), maybe even one on how armor should work within defense and offense. That last one had yet to be done well IMO. A person/mind is the weapon everything else, including armor, are just tools. Edit: Also ask should "x" be done the way DS did it or CMW did it? That thread alone would be ridiculously long. Mostly disagreements and flame but still a good thread to have.
Fuck it. Going to do a bunch of polls and threads on opinions of how combat should be and try to relate them to all these lovely games we are talking about.
I for one, hope not for a mount & blade/chivalry style melee system, and the reason I would think is obvious: Speed. It takes time to wind up an attack and then swing, and the attacks are very deliberate. And this makes since with those games, because it it's more about weak character getting through each other's defenses and range combat is similarly slow. Not so much here, where if it take more than a second to wind up my choppa I'm going to get mowed down by that space marine with a bolter with 12 shots to the face. I would prefer to see a more actiony style melee, more about timing with quick or powerful attacks and dodging/blocking at the perfect time. Something like Arkham Asylum or one of the spectacle fighters like DmC or Bayonetta
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Chivalry, Mount and Blade, and Dark Souls are some big inspirations for us, and we're drawing on them as much as we can. Of course, we need to find what's going to work for our game, but sounds like we're looking in the right direction!
Thanks a lot for sharing that bit of information, sir. I had a feeling that these titles and Planet Side would be inspirations for the game <3. I am very excited to see how you guys implement the melee combat system especailly. I don't think there have been any MMO games that used the kind of system like in Chivalry and M&B. My best and well wishes to the team and their work.
Indeed they do. Oh, btw, encase you haven't seen it, their lead designer just confirmed (on this forum) that games like Chivarly, Mount & Blade and Dark Soul have played a huge part influencing their melee combat.
