  1. There goes the rest of the playerbase...

(I seriously cant tell if thats sarcasm or not)
There is a certain point to where will/must be bended. Its not like we want the entire game to be a completley different uninverse on its own, that would just be silly.

The arguments you present are only covering the CURRENT playerbase. Which may be decently sized yes, but you also have to remember about the playerbase of the future, its called "Thinking ahead" No, im not talking about the CoD people, im talking about the people who may be legitimately into 40k in the future.

Who gives YOU the right to judge people on their 40k knowledge? Who gives YOU the right to decide what lore can and can't be twisted? Like I said before, games ARNT ment for lore, they are ment E N T E R T A I N M E N T

( Rant done, continue baiting each other)

    Edit:
Well I just learned a lot about you today...

Go through my posts how many times have I insulted someone's imagination or intelligence and count how many times I have been insulted for those allegedly lacking qualities.

  3. Offensive names usually don't start cropping up till the game is popular enough to attract the infantile snot noised kids and immature teenagers; Which is usually around the 5 million players plus mark.

Which would likely never happen; Just how different teen and kid fans of Warhammer 40 000 are to other kids I run into is dramatic, usually they are either very passionately obsessed with Warhammer 40 000 and care a great deal about how others see them in the community, or they are mature beyound their years.

Having naming restrictions is good, but I don't think it's necessary for this game as I doubt very much that it would be so popular as to require the enforcement of it. Just thought I'd put that out there...

For the record I haven't seen offensive names in LoL until mid last year, in 2011 and 2012 I never ran into any. Also as far as MMOs go, the only MMOs I ever encountered offensive names in was WoW and in GW2 and SWTOR during their initial hype train months with a few million players.

Also for the record, banning certain names for lore reasons from being selected, never stopped people from playing Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, SWTOR etc etc etc. A lot of MMOs have names locked off for lore reasons; sad thing is people still find ways around it though.

You dont know anything about me pally. If it is "twisting" then it shouldnt be done

Lol. This thread got quite entertaining.

I don't see the issue. Do we need 50 Abaddons running around? Or people with more x's in their name than actual name? It's not censorship, and isn't restrictive to anyone with imagination, keeps the people at GW happy and the people really in to their lore happy. Not sure I see who loses.

I used to GM a small MMO client based game (4story) and, separately, a browser game. We banned multiple offensive names per day in both games, and both game's playerbase was tiny. Player number has nothing at all to do with that.

  6. .

    just gonna leave that there

Yeah games tend to degrade the bigger they get, especially with MMOs

What if the naming is not offensive per-se, but isn't really characterful? (Mine for instance) How does that work?

Since Wraith is not 1 but at least 2 different unit-types in lore it "might" be restricted but i personally dont have a problem...although it would really only sound sensible for...idk a weird Eldar or something...i would assume that your added letters after the initial word will allow you to keep it maybe

I'm sorry but, what if those 'newbies' want to call themselves stuff like Silverbolt, the Mighty Jingles, BohemianTiger, XxStalkerBolterxX etc. Those are not names that fit into the Warhammer 40,000 background easily and how are people who have previously never encountered warhammer 40,000 supposed to know what names fit into the setting? Because even then you can either have those 'un-immersive names' or you can just block and restrict them entirely and have no freedom what so ever.

Here's the thing, Arguably the most important resource an MMO needs is players, it needs to be popular and have a healthy intake of fresh meat who are attracted to the game so the game doesn't die out within 6 months.
secondly, a game developer needs money to support the game, pay its workers and keep the game alive by releasing patches, updates etcetera whilst also making a profit.

Anything which detracts from sales or an important resource is an obstacle and a hindrance. I am not Ign's target demographic or even Kotaku's but I do understand the importance of good publicity and the dangers of negative criticism. So far Eternal Crusade is pretty non-existent in terms of advertisement. I regularly go to my local Games Workshop and I also speak to people outside of it who are pretty hardcore fans of Warhammer (One who had an aquila tattooed onto his back) and a worrying number of them have not heard of Eternal Crusade. Do not be afraid of success.

I doubt they'll be that pedantic. The issue, if GW are indeed the reason for the restriction, would lie in using trademarked terms, not parts of those terms.
