Well, where to start. First of all, to be so illogical that an entire Faction shouldn't be included because of a Weapon is already so wrong. Can't believe Dev's blatantly stated that, because they're "not sure" Flamers will be do-able, they'll not include an entire Faction. First aspect of it, is I can understand if this was a Black Library Novel or something, where you read as the Salamanders have no Heat-themed weapons with them in battle or something like that. But this? This is a game. This is an Instanced, Arena Shooter game. With that in mind, tell me how it becomes relevant for a Sub-faction that a weapon isn't available? As if all of the Salamander players you'd encounter would carry a Flamer. It'd be available to anyone anyway, Xenos too. "But no, flamers is the only thing Salamanders use!" No, it isn't. Close Combat specialists and a thing for Heat weapons. Heat weapons. That doesn't only count a Flamer. Salamanders makes extensive use of Plasma and Meltas etc. And funny enough, both of those weapons are in the game. So Salamanders would feel pointless? (Because they don't have 1 weapon in the game) What about Alpha Legion? What about Night Lords? Aren't they pointless too? It's a game. A game where a Night Lord or Alpha Legionnaire doesn't have to play out like their Legions characteristics. A game that I had hoped I could play as a Salamander, with no intention at all to use a Flamer. So I'll never buy the excuse of not adding a Sub-faction because a weapon is missing as legit.
Flamers? We don't need no stinking Flamers, WE GOT HAMMERS!!!! XD... But this was such a great post!!!
Truly Fellow Salamander you know all our ways. It is and amazing sight to see one so intellectual on the Salamanders culture.
The Salamanders are very awesome and deserve a spot in the game. I learned this from someone else who posted on the other Salamander thread and he said how we should put in the First founding chapters before we put in other accessory like chapters. I am not saying those chapters are bad but I am saying we should get the first 20 original chapters into the game before we put in a bunch of others.
Out of curiousity, and not picking this thread over the other ones for any reason, why do all the 1st founding chapters need to be here in a 40k setting? I would understand if this was a 30k setting but 40k just seems like an odd choice to group every 1st founding into. It seems to me like it would make better sense to use a grouping of different foundings. Most of these chapters are either spread out a lot or in a completely different part of the galaxy entirely. Just seems like a good time to add core "lore"(lose term since its just a game) chapters from the more obscure ones. Again I just picked this thread at random because I just don't get why so many SM fans think that specific chapters HAVE to be included. PS: my favorite SM chapter is the salamanders so I wouldn't mind them being added
Think about it this way, everyone knows the 1st founding chapters, but few might be aware of that obscure 17th founding chapter with that one gimmick that makes it different enough from the rest of the Ultramarine-pattern latter founding chapters that you might like. One has a guaranteed fanbase, the others might have had passing glances on Lexicanum or one of the fluff books/codices. Look at DoW, it started with the Ultras and everyone was happy (might be stretching that a bit), but the moment the Blood Ravens were introduced, shit hit the fan for some that has yet to stop. You can still find people moaning about the Blood Ravens being canon or how Relic should drop them in favor of someone else.
I like to think of it as an opportunity to introduce new fans or people who are unaware of 40k and happen to try this game to something other than the usual stuff. I didn't know the black dragons even existed until I read the Death of Antagonis. After that I was seriously questioning GW logic in not making them a more mainstream faction. That got me looking at other obscure chapters. And after reading some of their exploits I actually felt a little cheated that these guys don't get more of a spotlight. Would it be so bad if the carccharadons were added to the game? What about the fists exemplar or a succesor to the BA chapter ( excluding flesh tearers. I already have a thread about how much I dislike that group and why) Only focusing on the 1st founding seems like such a waste of awesome lore and world building that 40k kind of needs right now.
The problem is that a videogame is a risky proposition for the studio making it, so they need to make it so that it has the maximum amount of people interested before it comes out. In the case of 40k that means known variables like space marines from chapters with lots of fans. Do you think every SM game that has come out using the Ultramarines is because the devs are all Ultramarine fans? No, they pick Ultramarines every time (and recently Blood Angels, Dark Angels and to a lesser degree Space Wolves as well) because GW tells them that those are the most played factions, meaning the greater pool of potential players. People know their story, their gimmicks, their drawbacks. You can't do that with a homebrew chapter that you need to explain every detail in the space of a 6-8 hour campaign, if it even has one. Relic switching to Blood Ravens after they acquired a fanbase was a risky move that paid off that time, but that had probably more to do with the game being awesome so the players would bear with it more than the curiosity over a new chapter. P.S.: Never heard of the Fists Exemplar.
