The Sadness Of The Inevitable Grind..

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Daegog, May 18, 2015.

  1. Well, so far I have seen that each kill gets 50 xp from some gameplay. And we have seen that some unlocks are between 2000-5000 xp. So 40-100 kills for each unlock so far.

Personally im going to be more focused on faction objectives and killing Nids as sport.... making my pointy ear necklace is more important to me than unlocking some other gun that doesn't increase my Dakka (basically make me stronger not actually rate of fire)

  3. What Planetside 2 has done is to give some of the best weapons available in the game as starter weapons. I think its a genius idea and I hope EC can take from that idea and run with it.

I like how Battlefield 4 alleviates the grind - unlocking bonus items and equipment, emblems, so on so forth. That and it has a bunch of different varied environments.

I hope it will be objectives and not kills for the xp.
Otherwise will get kill traders for unlocks :X

This could be almost unavoidable, particularly if guilds are allowed to "challenge" each other and gain points for it.

Its so weird people even see Planetside 2 as grindy.

New guns are the only thing that take a few days of play to unlock and that's because its free to play - you can pay a few bucks to get those guns instantly if you dont want to grind. They're all sidegrades that perform in different niches and as @Sledgecrushr said the starter guns are good all rounders.

Everything else in the game - abilities, scopes, performance upgrades take bugger all time to unlock at their lower levels, and those lower levels comprise about 90% of the performance you're going to get compared to the top tiers of upgrade.

After about my first month of play i didn't even notice certs coming in or not anymore - I just played the game for fun and put certs in at the end of each play session to what I was using most or wanted to try out.

EC would do well to take a lot of leaves out of this book - make the game fun even with the starter stuff, allow early low cost 'entry' into all cert lines so people can play with bunches of different stuff over the first couple of months of their play time, and then ramp up tiers for the completionists/long time players that want that extra 1% effectiveness (hint - it makes precious little difference on the battlefield compared to situational awareness, tactics and picking the right tool for the job).

@Daegog - its not exactly going to be diablo where you have to grind for 2 months just to find that one item that will allow you to progress to the next difficulty. If you can unlock most of the basic items and skills for every class in your faction in your first few weeks of play is that really so bad? Maybe you just need to ignore the experience bar? PS2 doesn't have one and it works fine.

EDIT: i'd be genuinely miffed if you can veteran a class in 50 hours. I've probably played 200 hours of Planetside 2 and still a ways off veteraning my main class.

Its odd that you mention the Chivalry as the first few comments on the steam sale thread mention the team stacking situation which is so common in games where people can team up with buddies and effectively "noob stomp".

I never got around to playing this particular game, it looks interesting, but the comments leave one a bit.. hesitant.
  10. Never had any real issue with team stacking, you die countless times as a nwb but getting kills here and there and a great atmosphere of voice commands and setting make a lot of people play on- also many servers especially probably the american ones have level specific servers say 0-15 etc. Generally the really good players find it boring to just nwb stomp as there is no challenge and no excitement to it. They would have to be pretty big trolls to do so. But again that would be really boring.
It takes a bit of time through kills to unlock all the weapons. But nearly everyone focuses on their " fav".
In the end its the gameplay which will decide if hardcore players will stay on. Strong mechanics and gameplay and a competitive field that allows both good players and nwbs to contribute will be the deciding factor of the success of this game, not the leveling. If those elements are good no one will care.
There are many more different and interesting races and classes in this game, so I am extremely hopeful if they nail the gameplay down then it will definitely be a huge success open world on launch or not!
