Well, I wouldn't really consider those "inhumanly lanky" Sure, they seem a bit on the thin side, but I think that's more just the artist messing up than them actually going for that look. Look at the arms of the red Autarch for example, the artist tried to add depth by making them look smaller but instead just makes the arms look tiny. The other piece of art is just a flat out abomination, what is that, a space diaper? It's probably worth noting that as far back as 2nd and 3rd edition the art had human proportions.
I don't even want them to be human-shaped. I'm perfectly fine with them being properly longer. I just want them to have proportions that denote functional anatomy and the presence of internal organs/ muscles.
This (attached) is how I always see Eldar. It's Jes Goodwin's design sketch for the original Dire Avengers. They're tall and elegant, with slightly longer legs than humans. The key is slightly, and crucially not with tiny heads. I see Eldar as built like the kind of gymnasts who use the rings or the parallel bars. I think that some artists go overboard on the "make 'em alien" details, but it's only when they go to extremes that they fail in my opinion. I'd say the original Ranger art at the start of this post is nice, but a tad too long in the legs and maybe a wee bit small in the head. Nothing as extreme as "T-Rex arms, tiny currant eyes" Seer. By Khaine, I've been wanting to say that for ages. Those teeny, beady eyes. Like p*ss-holes in the snow. Gah. Red Autarch ... proportions aren't bad, the composition of the painting is great, but his armour always reminds me of bacon. I'm sorry.
doesn't gymnasts have average human proportions? i think a a basketball player would be close to ones we're looking at. lol oh thanks for reminding me of those horrible eyes!!! i hate them so much. 0__0 what kinda humans have u been hanging out with? i have a theory thou... i think most artist try to balance the long eldar helmet by making the rest of the body longer. heroic propotions. looks great with the helmet on. but helmet off... then we get all this kinda weirdness... now that i think about it more. make sense. look at those eldar cosplayers with the big helmet... totally doesnt look good.
Jorimel, I sincerely hope that if we get Dire Avengers we do get more than a combat knife to go with the Shuriken Catapults. Swords which can later be upgraded to power swords and then dire swords. Dire swords, woo!
Well, basketball players for proportions, gymnasts for build, as in distribution of muscle mass, if that makes sense? This would make so much sense ... why didn't I think of this before? I fully support Swords for Dire Avengers! As I believe we've already discussed elsewhere
