I'm sure we will see a release for Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade on steam. If not, that's cool to, i'm still gonna play the game regardless
The legitimacy i refer to, is the ability to cheat at a videogame. If you can't cheat in a game, it's legit. If you can cheat, like every game on valve... It isn't. At one point, World of Warcraft was considered an eSport, by none other than MLG. The class balance issue was the sole reason it was removed. It wasn't an issue of hack mods or anything of the like. Also, it's debatable whether class balance was even a feasible reason to remove it; since every gamer had the opportunity to play any class, and have any class as their teammate. They still host their own Tournament's at conventions, and still have Tournament dedicated servers for online play. As for what eSports enthusiasts or representatives ( Specifically the ones getting money from eSports ) have to say about any videogame, Blizzard makes more money than any of them, and, most importantly to me... Is filled with people who think a sub-genre of RTS takes a'lot of skill / think Aimbot's in CoD don't effect the game in any major way. What those people think is irrelevant to any competitive gamer and any videogame producer ( Outside of Activision, who thrive on mediocrity and disposable gameplay ). The only decent decision Activision ever made was to acquire Blizzard, and let them run business the way they always did. And lastly... Blizzard has it's titles available for download via the internet, through it's website. Obviously, you don't think Behavior is very capable. They have the chance to become an entity, business wise, much like Blizzard. You would have them throw away that chance for a camp group of gamers who cannot do without their Steam Community. Then at the slightest mention of it not being present, go through instant trauma, and resort to offensive language. Don't bring console gaming up. Both PSN and X-Box Live allow digital download of all titles on respective consoles... Adding another avenue would be redundant.
Steam has grown exponentially over a decade. Since I do not know the business or technical end of porting/listing a game for use on Steam, I can't properly recommend starting the process. Marketing might be a plus because Steams front page is instant advertising. A million unique views and perhaps achievement and badge incentives to draw more players. Whatever the outcome is, I know I'll buy and subscribe indefinitely to Eternal Crusade ^_^
My point is that Steam is merely a launcher and digital delivery system. I would argue that anti-cheat is only a part of a game being legitimate, but meh. Not all Steam games with online components run on Valve servers. Many do not. Blizzard makes the money it does because it had a better (and sometimes the only) skinner box for many years and launched that skinner box at the final days of Everquest. PSN and X-Box Live = Steam for consoles, because its a digital delivery system where you can purchase, download and install games and have a friends list and track stupid achievements. Also, as I understand it EA's awful Origin client also runs on consoles, adding another redundant avenue. Yeah, I guess because maybe thinking it would be a good business decision to put the game on Steam and have a big splash thing on its front page of the store while still running it on Pikko servers or whatever Behavior is using means I'm both stupid and think Behavior is too. It doesn't matter to me if the game is on Steam or not. I stated that in my earlier post. It's not a matter of "Boohoo it's not on Steam" because it's a matter of "Is this a good business decision, financially?". I don't run Behavior, so it ultimately isn't my problem to worry about. I'd post a reaction image for your last paragraph but I'm pretty sure the mods wouldn't appreciate it. Edit: After reading another one of your posts I see now why you hold Blizzard on such a high pedestal.
Steam if one can live without it then its better, one would say otherwise but steam snags quite a chunk of ones profit if you got cash shop in your game, if your game is a one time buy only then it is a good choice, or if your game is dying.
I agree with what you said, I just didn't like that Origin was brought up. It's, something all us gamers would rather forget. Permanently. As for Blizzard, from a competitive PvP standpoint, it's closed servers were an asset to me. What with, playing thousands of CoD Matches, getting rolled by Aimbots / Walhhacks etc, it is a welcome reprieve. I couldn't think of another game to bring up that suited a 40k Forum, besides that and WAR ( Or another MMO that was hack / hack mod free). That being said, The only other subject i jump on the bandwagon of Blizzard for, is it's business success. I assure you... The kind words towards mediocrity, end there.
Trufax. Not a real computer or IT literate guy, but I figure keeping everything server side with the client only having the assets would keep things hack free?
Our Gaben, who art at Valve, hallowed be thy name. Thy ideas come, thy games be done, on Steambox as it is on PC's. Give us this day our daily deal, and forgive us our infractions, as we forgive those who troll against us. And lead us not into flaming, but deliver us from Moderators. For thine is the Valve, and the keyboard, and the crowbar, for ever and ever, Gabe N.
Yes, that is one of the main aspects of remaining hack free. The other is what i like to call policing of the server, i call it that purely for ease of understanding. The real problem i have with steam, to put it as bluntly as possible, is that if they were an avenue to play the game... It opens up another door, almost. I only bring up the hacking so frequently because of how many gamers would be put off the game. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss, like the majority of CoD gamers ( I mean what they know about cheating in their games.. not them as individuals ). I have no problem with Steam, if it can be integrated to not be a security risk. It sounds over the top just to stop cheating... But the competitive PvP community stay in games for a long time if there isn't cheating. A'lot of stable revenue, outside of initial sales.
