Hey guys, It's time for something new. I'm looking to start an RP set in the Great Crusade time frame, ie the time before the Horus Heresy began. Two hundred years of conquest and re-conquest, as mankind moved back out in to the stars again, this time under the guidance of their Emperor. Now, before I lay out plans for the scenario, a couple of things are needed. First, and foremost, is a show of hands, of course. Next, and probably just as important, is to pick which legion to use. Now, I'm not wanting to allow all the legions to be a choice, nor am I wanting to use characters from across the legions. As such, I've eliminated the legions which I judge as being the more popular ones, so we can pick ones who are perhaps less well represented, and more in need of love. I am willing to let you use legions which would go on to be traitors, however at this stage there would be no suggestion, nor reason to suggest, that the treachery would be forthcoming. The choices are: Imperial Fists Salamanders White Scars Iron Warriors Word Bearers World Eaters Night Lords Iron Hands Raven Guard Please pick your top three, your first preference will be given three votes, your second two, your third one. The legion with most votes will win. Once a legion is decided we can start to work out scenarios, etc, etc, etc. Now, as this is 30k, not 40k, there are a couple of key differences to highlight. First, and probably foremost, the marines are legions, not chapters. Their numbers are far higher, their resources are much greater. There's no codex astartes, and each legion varies in its organisation, equipment, tactic and practices. On top of that the technology available is far more varied and, in almost every case, superior to is 40k version. Also, technology which is rare, or even lost, in 40k is likely to still exist in 30k. For instance, the marine legions also had access to super heavy vehicles such as the Fellblade, and weapons such as the various volkite guns. The Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy were a single, unified army, called the Imperial Army. They were used alongside marine legions to hold and fortify captured planets, as well as to add much needed manpower in most circumstance. There's also no Inquisition or Sisters of Battle. The marine legions were also organised differently from their 40k counterparts. The legion is divided in to chapters. Each chapter is divided in to battalions. Each battalion is divided in to companies. Each company is divided in to squads. How many squads made up a company, or companies made up a battalion, etc, varied from legion to legion, because of the differences in their size. At this stage of the history the council of Nikaea has taken place, so Librarians are banned and Chaplains are newly created positions within the legion. There are no scouts in 30k, instead the marines used recon squads (basically still scouts, but in power armour, and usually experienced marines not rookies). There are probably more differences, but I think those are the main ones. Any others will be covered should the need arise. Characters So, on to character sheets. I won't be using google sheets, or anything like that (barring, possibly, the odd map). There are a couple of classes available to start with. The information in brackets will be their default starting equipment. I'll offer upgrades as we move forward. The tacticals and assaults are similar to their 40k version. The recon squad are basically scouts, as detailed above and the heavy support marines are devastators, more or less. The legions used tactical support squads, to carry weapons like flamers or plasma guns, but for this one we'll just have those carried by tacticals, as in 40k. The ranks which players start as will depend on which legion is picked and how many players join. I may use an NPC squad leader, or I may allow a player to perform that role, depending on how things go. Classes 1. Tactical marine (bolter, bolt pistol, knife, frag and krak grenades). Starting options: May exchange bolter for chainsword or flamer 2. Assault marine (bolt pistol, chainsword, frag and krak grenades, jump pack). Starting options: May exchange bolt pistol for hand flamer. 3. Recon marine (bolter, bolt pistol, knife, frag and krak grenades, shroud bombs). Starting options: May exchange bolter for shotgun or sniper rifle. 4. Heavy support marine (heavy bolter, bolt pistol, knife, frag and krak grenades). Starting options: May exchange heavy bolter for heavy flamer. Traits I will be using the good old trait system, however I won't be allowing characters to be masterful in all aspects of war. As such picking one of the following trait/flaw combinations is mandatory. Which of those combinations you pick will dictate which weapons are available for future upgrades, as well as which classes I will let people upgrade to later on, etc. For the rest it's your choice (pending my approval), but I will allow no more than three traits and three flaws to begin with. More traits/flaws will be assigned in due course, dependent on the actions taken during the campaign. You may have one more trait than flaw (eg two traits, one flaw or three traits, two flaws) I am allowing players to lead a squad, if they wish, but won't be forcing them to. As such, when creating a character, you can either pick a sergeant rank, or a normal brother. If you decide to be a sergeant, you should then create between 4 and 9 NPC marines, to form your squad. You will then roleplay for the whole squad, as well as your own character (the sergeant). Any NPCs you pick will share your starting class, and starting equipment. NPCs don't need a history written out, it's largely irrelevant and will mostly just be a waste of time to write. Basics Character Name: Age: Physical Description: Likes: Dislikes: Starting Class: (see above) Rank: You may pick sergeant, or battle-brother (see above) Equipment Primary Weapon: Secondary Weapon: Tertiary Weapon: Grenades: Armour Armour Mark: (must be between Mk2 and Mk5. You can mix different pieces if you wish) Misc items: Eg jump packs (if applicable). Traits 1. (martial strength, see above) 2. 3. Flaws 1. (martial weakness, see above) 2. 3. NPCS 1. Name: Personality: 2. Name: Personality: 3. Name: Personality: 4. Name: Personality: 5. Name: Personality: 6. Name: Personality: 7. Name: Personality: 8. Name: Personality: 9. Name: Personality: Please PM me your character sheets and votes. Please also add your own user name to the PM's title, so I can tell them apart without having to open them all, should I need to message you.
The votes are in and counted. We will be playing as the siege specialists, the Iron Warriors (which is an awesome and totally underrated legion of badassery). With the legion picked, you can start your character sheets/edit the ones already written, and we'll get this started. The OOC pm should be used for any questions, I'd prefer to keep this fairly spam free. If you lack access to that PM, just nudge me for an invite. Introduction It is the thirty-first millennium. Mankind is in the ascendancy, the Emperor and his Primarchs lead humanity out from the Sol System and back to the worlds beyond. A campaign of reclamation and conquest is underway; the Great Crusade. The aliens, the mutants and the corrupt will be pushed back from humanity's worlds. Those who refuse to submit to their Emperor will be destroyed. At the spearhead of the crusade are the great Space Marine legions. One such legion are the Iron Warriors. Led by the great Primarch Perturabo, they are renowned and, in some circles, even feared for their ferocious ability in siege warfare. To them warfare is a science, the individual doesn't matter, only the legion as a whole. Their tactics and beliefs are looked down upon with scorn by others. Corax and his Raven Guard see the siege warfare, especially with its high rate of attrition, as an offence to their own way of War. Dorn and his Imperial Fists wildly boast about their impenetrable fortresses, an insult to the Iron Warrior's offensive ability. And yet the Iron Warriors persevere, mute in their offence, their sights instead set upon their next conquest. Where some may question their tactics, none may question their results. World, after world, has fallen to their might. Fortresses which many would deem unassailable lay in ruin, pounded to dust by the mighty artillery guns of the legion. There are rumours that some within the Imperial Army refer to the Iron Warriors are called 'The Corpse Grinders', due to the high losses, both in their own ranks, and especially in the ranks of the Imperial Army itself during their campaigns. There are stories of Imperial Army regiments preferring to openly rebel than be assigned to the Iron Warriors. As such, many of the Imperial Army units assigned to them are drawn from the penal legions. To the Iron Warriors, such losses were a means to an end. The legion's sheer size allowed them to fight through losses which would cripple most other legions. They largely managed to make up for their losses, even, as their recruitment was constant. The Iron Warrior's affinity for technology is rivaled only by the Iron Hands. Their use of cybernetics is less extensive than the Hand's, but their use of super heavy tanks, or strange, rare, patterns of vehicles outweighs those of any other legion. The Iron Warriors are lent little to no rest between battles, the strength of their ability in siege warfare is also their downfall. They perform tasks which many other legions would deem as beneath them. Their style of warfare is dirty, it is slow, it is meticulous and, in many instances, it is without glory. The Iron Warriors tackle some of the hardest assignments within the Crusade, but praise and and glory is rarely forthcoming. In the latest assignment given to the legion, they have been tasked with reclaiming the Caer sector from the accursed Orks. With three inhabited planets in the system, the legion decided to tackle all three at once. As is the usual Iron Warriors tactic, they bombarded the planets from orbit. Their attacks proved incapable of routing the enemy, they descended to the planet, ready to unleash hell upon the greenskins. They found several large Ork forts, some carved in to the side of the great mountain ranges, others partially hidden underground. Though their orbital strikes had eliminated great swathes of the aliens, many more remained alive, and ready to fight the Iron Warriors. The 49th Grand Battalion, numbering roughly a thousand astartes and led by Warsmith Vensou, have been tasked with taking one such fortress, carved in to the base of a mountain. With the orbital bombardment ceased, the Orks have poured back out from their fortifications, and have fortified their position outside of the fortress itself. With the battalion's beachhead, several kilometers outside of the Ork held territory, secured the marines have set about planning their attack... ++Priority communication++ ''Brothers, this is Warsmith Vensou speaking. Our legion have arrived in the Caer system, tasked with the cleansing of Ork filth from the habitable planets. The 49th Grand Battalion is to be deployed to the surface of Caer III. Report to your Captain of further instruction.'' ++Aboard the Iron Warriors Grand Cruiser, Iron Tempest++ ''Brother sergeants, as you know the planet below is infested with greenskin filth. Efforts to purge them from space, though successful in the most part, failed to completely eradicate the xenos scum. They've taken position in several fortifications. Our job is to break their fortifications down, and destroy them from within,'' Captain Tertex said. ''Squads three through eight will take the eastern side of the fortress. You will be accompanied by two armoured companies. Squads one, two, nine and ten will take the western side. You will be accompanied by three armoured companies.'' ''This plan of attack is...'' ++Iron Tempest, first squad briefing hall++ ''-and so, to sum it up-,'' Sergeant Vlyr Hack, leader of the first squad said. The assembled Iron Warriors; Arbax, Forex, Grey Fox, Galimon, Magnus, Bodugan, Inikov, Adex and Raham, the brothers under Hack's command, listened intently. ''-the artillery guns will crack the Orkhold's armoured shell. Then we will breach their lines and wreak havoc from within. Our own aircraft have already cleared a landing zone, and the Imperial Army are holding it until we arrive. Once we land, we are to proceed to clearing the enemy forces in the immediate vicinity, before our tanks and artillery can be brought to the surface. We will then dig in and hold position until such time that the Ork fortress' walls are compromised. Any questions, my brothers?'' OOC: Ask away. All the players are assigned to the same squad, despite different classes, for the sake of ease.
Forex stood at attention as he listened to the plan, mouth a thin cut line across the mass of scar tissue one might be able to mistake for a face from a distance. His heavy flamer was situated at waist height with it's chambers focused toward the wall as he stood at the extreme left of their formation. "Orders clear. Secure area. Purge Xenos. " Nodding his head firmly the Heavy Weapons trooper awaited dismissal or whatever concerns his squad mates may bring up.
"I am ready Will we be able to bring a apothecary with us In case we need a medic?" The grey fox asked His helmet was on his belt and beside it was his bolter a skull adorned it with flames showing some of his art expertise.
He had been in the training pits when the summons had arrived, in all honestly an Iron Warrior should have ceased whatever activity they were doing long ago, when the Battalion had entered into realspace. Arbax Joraka however had found a more useful way to spend his time as the Legion's ships rained death on the greenskin hordes below. The Iron Warrior had been down in the pits as always, sparring against weapons servitors and his brothers. In this instance the former, charging through volleys of bolter fire with shield raised and chainsword ready to get at the automated servitors going through pre-designated kill commands. Unfortunately the boarding shield; larger than a man and heavier than one too, had been damaged beyond use in the training exercise, so Arbax settled for his bolt pistol to compliment the long Acitus Pattern Chainsword sitting comfortably at his hip. There was still a sheen of sweat coating his forehead and the shock of black hair along his scalp was matted to his head. "Sergeant, have scans revealed any details of the xenos stronghold's walls? How long can we expect the cannons to be firing before we do our part?" If there was one thing Arbax understood, it was the grinding and mechanical nature of a siege. All Iron Warriors did. For this warrior however, he yearned for the falling walls all the more. It was with screaming chainswords and roaring bolters, echoing off the walls of a fortification's interior, that the Legionnaire truly lived for.
''We will be deploying at full strength, with full support,'' the sergeant said. ''Scans were unable to penetrate far in to the stronghold, the mountain blocked our attempts. However initial scout reports have indicated them to be several meters thick. These are mere greenskin constructs, though, they won't stand long when tested against our guns.''
