Eh. Heretic, Renegade, whatever. To me it's literally a matter of Traitor being the worst choice including no change whatsoever from the original Tactical. It's still kinda a name based on what Space Marines would call them, but it's still better.
I'd personally say 'no', for the same reason that Traitor doesn't. It's a viewpoint which is defined from the Imperium's perspective, and one of the principles here is that while Chaos as a faction are generally quite relaxed about being referred to as Traitors, Heretics, Spiky Boyz, Misguided Mon-Keigh and so forth by the other races, we do at least deserve to have our own classes named as we name them, not based on an implied slur by other factions.
Agreed - we know dissatisfaction is widespread. What we don't have is a unified voice behind a single option to change it to. That's the part I want to see us find a way to resolve, because at that point we can meaningfully engage with Behaviour about getting things changed without them having to throw in a ton of effort for themselves. I don't mind gathering evidence of how an alternative is used in the lore/40k brand. I don't mind running the poll and explaining what we're doing, and why, and why the choice may be very limited. Hell, I don't actually mind engaging with Katie (or whoever) about the results to see if we can find a sympathetic ear on the development team to run the idea past Nathan and see what can be done. Like you, I don't consider myself the ideal person to do this as I have no particular relationship with the devs either. It'd be great if someone like Djemo, or a mod like Savij, was willing to champion it - but that's a stage or two further down the line, and we can cross that bridge when we get there, if the poll results are heavily in favour of making a change. It would be slightly easier if we still had Ivan, given he's familiar with what happened last time. However, he can't be the only person with the e-mail of an approvals person at GW and though it's a shame he's not still with us (for more than just that reason), I don't think it's the biggest of the potential roadblocks in the way. However, I don't want to fire the starting gun on a poll without at least a broad agreement on whether we're going to get behind an option in advance, or whether we need to do a pre-poll on which option that should be on an eyes-wide-open basis (ie, if people want to put forward a name which isn't currently used in the lore, we have to know there's a fair chance it could go down in flames and leave us stuck with 'Traitor'). Right now, I get the feeling Chaos Space Marine seems like the least-bad option to replace Traitor, rather than the preferred one, whose main benefit is its dead-cert status in lore terms. That means if we do go with it, we need a decent chunk of people who agree with why we're doing it and are supportive - we absolutely don't want a series of public arguments / Chaos civil war erupting at a point when we're trying to demonstrate an unusual unity of purpose amongst the Chaos Legions.
Seeing as @Kanthric is doing all the legwork here, I'll second him. Let's start this. I propose that everyone who wants a name change and wants to be involved, post on this thread now. At the very least, we'll have a list of names of people who are willing to put their names on a petition at the end of this. Follow this up with a poll to get the 1/2 names to give to Bhvr/GW. At the end, we can put an official thread out detailing what the issue is, what the community solution is, and have everyone who supports it post on it as a nominal petition list. At the very least, Kanthric might get some closure, and that's good enough for me. So post away peeps. Please do read the following 2-3 pages of posts, they'll help clarify a lot about the naming. Legionnaire, Legionary, and Marauder were the top 3 names before Traitor in the official poll I believe, and seeing as they were not accepted, it's assumed they will probably not be accepted a second time around. At this point I think we're looking at Chaos Marine or Chaos Space Marine (the name that matches the box of the table-top unit). Feel free to put in your ideas, I think it's a good idea to have another round of hashing before an official poll is put up. Thank you. Edit^3: I realized Chaos Tactical as a class name hasn't actually been touched on in the past couple pages, so I removed it from my Edit^2. I like it as it is more exclusive to the class, but for branding purposes discussed above it doesn't fit as well. It is the community's decision whether you want to include it, not mine, so hash that out below.
