I consider the minimap and red dots a total crutch, the system holding your hand and leading you along and it's a total immersion killer. I'd rather hunt my human opponents, using my eyes, ears and voice comms with my squad mates that are moving with me. What we have right now is almost as "softcore" as you could imagine. I'd like to see more of a happy medium between "hardcore" server type game play(no name tags, no minimap, no doritos) and "hand all your enemy locations to you on a golden platter"(what we have now) type game play. This goes hand in hand with how much our current mechanics(subject to change) and many weapons encourage and reward lone wolfing. An all seeing, all knowing minimap totally encourages lone wolfing. There's a difference between a group of lone wolves zerging versus game mechanics being in place that reward a squad that's shooting, moving and communicating as a team.
You gotta make the casuals happy too, I'm all for hardcore Darksouls difficulty in pvp style open world "This is the end, Surprise MotherFu*ker!" But in reality It would turn away 30-60% of the playerbase. Fun to dream though.
Which is why i said we need a happy medium, currently we're very softcore as far as spotting and red "shoot here" doritos. Friendly fire is hardcore server type stuff, but we're still leaning very heavy towards softcore game play. I'm not a fan of firing your weapon and flying with the Jetpack flagging you on enemy minimaps. Being stealthy and hopping rooftops on your Jetpack is futile because every time you fly you show up on every enemy minimap in the immediate vicinity? That's NOT the 40K universe, you should be able to sneak around rooftops with your Jetpack and NOT be spotted on the minimap. Please explain the logic behind being spotted just because you're using the Jetpack. I just dont see the point. Let players do the spotting, we dont need "magic" doing the spotting for us. FYI just spawning in flags you on the minimap. I know its a bug, none the less it's been a bug since day one of Founder's Alpha. Being surprised by an enemy every now and then, that's the fog of war and that's a more immersive experience.
I believe if you want more squad coordination and teamwork you need a minimap that constantly lets you know whats going on. Forming firing lines understanding the terrains layout and working alongside others while identifying enemy positions is all key for solid teamwork. I dont believe we should compare gaming to real life, real life has generals and drones scouting enemy positions. Real life war is a 24 hour endeavor. Completely different from "oh hi i just got home from school and now i'm gonna shoot mcfacey in his face". You cant expect randoms or as others call them PUGS to get dropped in a big map and expect him to work alongside others and communicate without easy to use tools and game functions. I'd vote for more minimap content. I want to see the terrain of the local area, a hotkey to change the minimaps size (large, medium, small) not just a full screen map key. I want to see a compass for coordination and when i press escape a full screen map that i can interact with and issue orders via. Communication and teamwork should be simple and easy, so players who dont want to play with guilds or use the voice comms can enjoy a pleasant gaming experience too. We already have squad orders and vox shortcuts/callouts. I use those tools constantly while playing with guild members and randoms. To further argue my personal view, the characters you play on the battlefield are elite warriors of futuristic factions. They have technology and training to be extra aware of their surroundings. A typical gamer from the other side of the screen is not an elite warrior. Not everyone has 3d sound, or eagle eyes vision. Im not saying we have to make the game stupid easy, but giving the players extra awareness only adds to each individuals experience. How many times have you heard another gamer (or yourself) say; "What?! What killed me? Thats bullshit, I was hit by nothing." "That guy just came in and killed me instantly, ugh i hate this." "Where did that guy come from, how did they get behind me?" A lack of minimap awareness will only cause more griefing and more frustration. It wont help the new players learn from their mistakes or understand how or why they died. Some people may see it as "easymode" but honestly when the tools are at everyone's disposal then its balanced.
I want to advocate just one thing, but its a BIG issue for me, and i mean it - make colors friendly for colorblind ppl like me, or make them adjustable like BF4 did, because right now its extremly hard to tell friendlies and enemies on the radar. Thats why im also a big fun of HUGE arrows over spotted enemies, i have trouble seeing them in some environments. That aside - space marines and eldar definetly have wargear with tactical displays, and that display is my radar. Dunno about orkz, they might not care cabout such lowly thing. So spotting must reamin in place, because without it tactical options for defence are even more limited that tactiacl options for offfence with spotting.
Nah, I need the Radar because I play on max graphics which is punishing on certain maps (Torias, Snow map). Rooms so dark you just melt into the shadows. People playing on low graphics see way, way more than I do. I'm ok with changing it from arrows to red dots though.
Or, how about nerf map, fix visibility? Tone down blinding screen effects, fix overly dark areas. Play the game with your eyes and ears in the game "on the battlefield," not watching a minimap. Better immersion imo. I don't enjoy "one eye on mini-map at all times" style of play.
