I haven't seen anyone bring this up yet. In the last twitch the devs made mention of "target lock" within the discussion on melee combat. This has me rather concerned. The Eldar are known for the "speed is better than toughness" philosophy. How are Eldar going to be able to use their speed, to out maneuver their opposition, if their opposition can just hit a magic button that keeps them turning to face??? It won't matter how many fancy flips, slides, rolls (etc) you do to get around them and out of their attack arc. They will just hit the magic button and hack us down. Seriously I feel like I'm on crazy pills. Can't anyone else see this? Thoughts people?
I think it's a legitimate cocnern, but nothing that can't be solved by implementing proper dodge mechanics. In my opinion, if you're automating aiming, then you should also put in place some automation for dodging. I don't know... Arkham-style dodge and counter prompts? Whatever the case, it's an issue that needs to be adressed.
the problem is the devs are only working with LSM and CSM playable characters at the moment so an idea that seems like it works between those 2 factions doesnt automatically work for all the factions and I'm not entirely sure thats occured to them yet
It is a very valid concern but I have a feeling we will see something implemented once the Eldar are playable as Tarl86 said right now the only things we have seen is Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines head to head fighting there has been very little to show any type of stealth mechanics or any thing other than relying on your armor to protect you. The best part about beta is if this auto lock becomes an issue for Eldar we will be able to give our feedback to the devs and see what kind of changes could be implemented to make it fair to both sides.
I think it will depend on how deep the cc mechanics go. If there is enough counter-play then they can face us all day but will constantly find themselves swinging short or getting blocked/parried/dodged. The devs have stressed their desire to give full support to ranged and melee tactics so I'm confident they won't stick us with a cc system that favors the well-armored races. I do see your concerns tho, and I would love to see skillful close combats that aren't dictated by who got 1st hit (like so many other games) and aren't over in 1 or 2 seconds. Imagine a scenario where mass cc erupts in a courtyard and there are enough defensive mechanics in the game to make sure it isn't over immediately. People don't want to fire primaries into the melee and it draws more combatants and swells into total chaos. Such a battle would be decided by clever squad tactics and use of elites/heroes. Maybe the faster side withdraws quickly as the order is given to grenade the courtyard. Maybe a heavy weapon is set up on the roof to control who enters or leaves the combat. Maybe a hero notices the bloody stalemate and drops in for a surprise visit. That's the type of things that should happen in 40k! However, as others pointed out, they have been focusing on SM and CSM plus they haven't told us all the juicy details of the new cc system yet.
Yep. I was thinking this too. But why don't think these things through to the obvious conclusion before deciding it's what they want? I think it needs more thought before wasting valuable resources on.
It might not be that big of a deal, just make eldar roll/dodge movement way faster than the other races, so even if they keep facing us we can avoid damage if we react fast enough.
You'll still have stamina and *may* be able to hold down some sort of dodge button while they're auto aiming, giving you a dodge on it. Then skill wise you have to know when to let up and blast them back.
I'm thinking of Dark Souls lock on (could also be a different lock on instead of the face target+targeting bracket style). It's probably only usable if targets are in range, still have to aim (or hit the target) to acquire the lock, and only for melee weapons in hand. So a tactical would need their knife out to do it. A concern I have is if lock on makes using pistols too easy. I would figure any ranged weapon not be influenced by it but I think SS mandiblasters could be. I recall devs saying turning speed is different between factions but I'm not sure.
