Well john was a agent before he was captured chopped up put back toghter several times then escaped half crazy with a chainsaw, I don't think many would recognized him or just think he died somehere.
And Night Dragoon was not a super when he left and with his power being what it is no one would assume that it was him.

Unless of course he's wearing a mask like a good little vigilante then yeah no one can see your face so no one knows who you are outside the costume.
They would know him yes might even figure he has gone vigilante, figuring a normal suddenly got powers and over someone's shadow. That would take time and more than a couple times seeing it. His power is subtle as I said.
