It wasn't WoW that killed the subscription MMO, it was the economy. People just can't/won't pay monthly for something they may not be able to use or do in the month they have. Example; If a game is designed with the intent of someone playing 20 hours a week for 4 month to get to max level, but you can only play 10 hours a week it now cost's you twice as much to get to max level. Although if you can play 40 hours a week the company now looses 2 months of subscription income. It is just better for players and the company to make it a one time cost. There is a risk in doing a Buy to Play, but the F2P Orks seem to be a good way to reduce some of that risk.
The F2P Orks idea makes me laugh every time. The following diagram may represent a breakdown of the Ork player base. The best part is that having a huge unorganized Ork F2P rabble will be both accurate and hilarious.
I wouldn't mind paying a subscription fee as long as it went to good use developing substantial content and not just piddley little updates.
I Like the idea of paying for the game, but I would like to subscribe than have micro transactions. To many garbage games out there that rely on micro transactions
I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been mentioned. When The Secret World went Buy 2 Play they also kept a subs service where people who wanted to continue supporting got a little something each month in return. I wouldn't be opposed to having this as an option if it helps ensure the games longevity and continued development
Just going to reiterate a previous post I made... I'd pay a subscription. The way it should work is a bit like Star Citizen's idea about it. Once you buy the game you have everything and don't have to pay, but there is an option in addition to the Free 2 Play aspect of the Orks. The third option would be a mesh of the two where you'd pay a subscription as either type of player. For those who buy the game and then subscribe it's simply a way to help keep the game funded and going without directly purchasing items from any type of cash shop (although they may still do that.) A Free 2 Play player who subscribes gets additional access to the game while they are subscribed as if they had bought the game. Once their sub runs out if they don't buy anymore time, they go back to being basic Free 2 Play players. However, once they have subscribed for enough time to equal the value of the game they are automatically upgraded to a full game member as they've paid the price of Eternal Crusade. They then have the same options as full Buy 2 Play players as they've essentially done that. You have multiple avenues to play the game and to help support it if you like it. If you buy the game outright (as I'm going to do) you don't have to pay a sub but have the option to if you like the game but it's not mandatory. If you don't want to buy the game and wish to try it out first, you can be a Free 2 Play player and have the choice of temporarily upgrading for a month or two to try out the core game, but again it isn't mandatory. If you do the last option you eventually become a full buyer. You could also have a small incentive added to the subscription that only happens once. Maybe it unlocks a few cosmetic choices for each faction immediately that you'd normally have to grind for in game just as a small thank you. Couldn't add anything that others don't have the chance to get to keep the subscription as optional but for those who REALLY want the game to succeed. I'd gladly play the game and if I enjoy it I have no problem paying per month to help support the game and the company behind it so that they can make better content and have a better player experience for others as well.
In the past mmorpg player was almost all hardcore/nerd, wow have ride the tide of the massification of internet and get a wider and wider audience. When someone start to develpoing MMO after wow, if try to do something different wide audience start say "i want wow like feature", and if they make a wow like game audience say "it's like wow it's a clone i go back wow". So now game can only surive tring to appeal different audience and avoiding the wow thing.
Look, not all of us have money spilling out of our asses. We should NOT have to pay extra cash monthly for something we already spent 60+ Dollars/Pounds/Euros/Lek on (60000 in case of lek. Yes,really)
