I'd say about 50/50. Should depend on factions in play, as well as whatever region and planet we're on. Keep in mind the game is promised to circle these planets around, and in 40k they have great difference. The same I'd say about the planetary regions. Would make sense if Eldar and Orks were colourful, but CSM were grimedgy. SM could be about halfway there. I mean, a ruined city fight between CSM and SM would just spell sadness and grimdark on your screen, but a jungle or desert conflict between Orks and Tyranids or Eldar (or all three) would be violent AND colorful. So yeah, 50/50 for me. Depending on the surroundings and factions at hand.
That's actually a good way of looking at it... 50/50 would make sense...after all Space Marines don't have camo and such. Chaos is all evil evil. Eldar have rhinestones everywhere and Orks are well...colorful.
I definitely would not like the game to look like that. And "visceral close combat" in cartoon style just looks awkward.
Well, another thing is that going too far off in one direction would possibly drive off fans of another direction. Some people like TF2-style Cell Shading, and dislike a more realistic take on violence. For some it's the opposite. Playerbase would be smaller for either side of the spectrum, and not only would the devs not make as much money (which will in the end affect players), we wouldn't have as many people of the opposite factions to crush beneath our bootheels.
Realistic is the way to go. PS2 manages to have a lot of players on screen. And blood. 40k has blood. We need the blood. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
I prefer Realistic, Grim, Dark washed colours with Gloomy, contrasting lighting...Personally I feel that a stylized Warhammer doesn't do justice to the dark, war-torn, gritty 40k universe that we all love...I'm also hoping for a Space Marine look
